Dogs

I've been coon hunting off and on since 1978 and never seen a real dominate reproducer in any breed in males only females and certain crosses 90 percent of the dogs I've owned and hunted with were common to average dogs and I've hunted with some well known dogs. A wise old man told me 30 years ago coonhunting is 95 percent b.s and about 5 percent real dog power and he lives not far from you in Kansas and is well k own in the treeing walker breed as one of the better hunters around the neosho river

Reproducer

There never has been or will be a reproducer that produced Big Hunt winners the way Z3 did.

I will name one---Smith's Hillbilly Mac.

In my territory, I know of 5 people that bred to him (Bob Dennison, Bill Davis, Charlie Miller, Lorrie Knight, Kermit Rogers). All got outstanding results. A large part of it probably relates to the fact that their style worked well in our terrain. That is a major factor.

Over the last 45+ years, I can say that a very large majority of the best that I've owned and hunted with had World Class backgrounds. I'd rather see some World Class hounds in a pedigree than a whole pedigree full of local level Nite Ch.'s and Gr. Nite Ch.'s. That's based on my personal experiences.

If Zeb 3 and Mac had never been in a hunt, but you had personally hunted with said dogs would they still be in program

I say "BEWARE OF ANYONE THAT HAS A PROGRAM". That usually is a marketing hype tool!!! Coonhunters coonhunt. Marketers have programs.

In the past 45+ years, two dogs standout as reproducers; Hardtime Speck and Hillbilly Mac. Tighter mouthed, STRAIGT, get treed, have the meat. With that blood fading away, I'm looking at Black and Tans and the Whitaker's Smokey blood. I like what I see from this better than anything since Speck and Mac. The Whitakers Smokey III dog that I recently got reminds me of the Speck and Mac dogs, with a different hide color.

My first Gr. Nite Ch. was never in a hunt, and never registered, until I got him. But, he was known by the local furbuyers.

Whether it's coonhunting, or anything else, put more trust in what you SEE than what you hear or read!!!

We need to focus on the type and ABILITY of hounds that we enjoy hunting. Impressing others + 1.00 will get you a McDonald's coffee. Focus on what you like! If others don't like the same thing, or don't care, so be it!!!!

"Whether its coonhunting or anything else, put more trust in what you SEE than what you hear or read".

This is advise that you shouldn't ignore if you are serious about upgrading the ability level of what you are hunting.
I was fortunate to be able to hunt with alot of the LEGENDs that people brag about as being superior dogs of the past and are trying to reproduce. Most were just nice dogs that had a SUPERIOR promoter trying to make money off of them. Ken Risley
