I had a similar situation as you. Had the male neutered. Glad I did. He is no different really, except he doesn't care that females are in heat. It's quiet around here now.
My vet says they are healthier when they get older, less chance of prostate issues.
It's been well over a year since he was fixed. I didn't change his feed amount, he has not gained weight. Stayed the same.
I've seen yard dogs and Tom cats gain weight, cause they stay home and don't roam the country anymore.
