I have 7 yr old male thinking about getting him fixed. I will never use him to breed. And I have 3 females.

You might have 10 people get on here and claim it will make him fat and lazy but that has not been my experience at all.

I had a similar situation as you. Had the male neutered. Glad I did. He is no different really, except he doesn't care that females are in heat. It's quiet around here now.
My vet says they are healthier when they get older, less chance of prostate issues.
It's been well over a year since he was fixed. I didn't change his feed amount, he has not gained weight. Stayed the same.
I've seen yard dogs and Tom cats gain weight, cause they stay home and don't roam the country anymore.

My next question. What special care is needed and for how long after neutering. I googled care after neutering. WoW that seem to be a nightmare. I'm sure the vet will have guide lines also.

I neuter most of my male dogs. It has worked well for me. It helps high strung, young males for sure. It eliminates negative, breeding driven behaviors. You will be able to haul & hunt him with females in season. He won’t act like an idiot in the kennel when a female is in heat. You won’t have to worry about turning him loose with in season females. You will be able to feed him a little less. He will probably be noticeably calmer. It has never affected any of my dogs desire to hunt.

It might take him a little longer to recover from the procedure since he is older. Nothing a cone collar, anti inflammatories, antibiotics, and rest wont heal. It’s a very routine procedure for vets. They are pretty good at it.
