Dogs

I do not think we have the necessary data to give an honest answer. Saying that, I have found that dogs like people who are very active live longer. I have had several coon dogs that were hunted hard and lived way beyond the average age. I firmly believe that keeping physically fit will extend the life of animals and humans. Absent any disease, physically fit equals longevity. Dave

Redbones

Had a guy tell me that breed takes longer to do everything, even die. Don't know if it's true but there you have it.

I had a walker gyp that made it to 19. My grandfather bought her for me when I was 13. She was about 8 months old when he brought her home and would run anything that made a track but would tree. She was yadkin river bred out of Jeff. She taught me how to hunt.

They say only the good die young. So redbones probably live the longest.

.

I have always felt it was a combination on Weather Conditions where you hunt. Combined with how you house and care for you dog when not hunting. I know winter can be harsh if dogs are not cared for. But always seem to noticed dog hunted in the heat seemed to now live as long.

I would think it could depend on the line and its longevity more then the breed. We found none of our Blueticks made it to 11 until the current dogs we have.

Honestly the coonhound breeds are all so closely related (relatively speaking, no pun intended) that longevity is generally the same among all breeds. The dogs diet and habitat have a lot to do with how long they live, too.

I knew of a guy who had an English female who lived to be 17. She had never been hunted hard, always lived outside, and hadn't been hunted at all in probably the last 10 years of her life. On the other hand I've seen hard-hunted dogs die by the time they were 8 or 10. It seems like they wore out. But we've all seen hard-hunted dogs live to 15, too, so who knows.

Ultimately I think how you treat them and what you feed them contributes more to their longevity than anything.
