You have to hold it up to your hand and mash the button to judge just how close it has to be.

Just snug enough to keep the prongs in contact with the skin on the neck with their head down.

I’ve got a young dog that’s getting hung up on bad tracks , I want to try using a E-Collar and see if I can pull her off of the bad tracks .
Has anyone got any advice on doing this?

Hot collar

I'll give this a shot, I understand what your saying you'll get varied opinions I'm sure, this is a very fine line in my view, young dogs learn to work a bad track by doing so experience is the best teacher, they never get better by not trying, moving a young dog along off a track there hung up on to me would best be done with Tone...not shock which would require your dog to be collar broke, I'm not big on shocking my dog off desired game only in emergency cases, but I will tone mine to come in or move on with me at times, hope this helps.....

Get you a good squaller learn how to use it and squall those boogers out and rerun them she trees it give one once in awhile. Most times there are more bad tracks than good ones some dogs need to run more good ones to learn how to drift a bad one.

You can most certainly can do this. But you can't just go to shocking on the dog and think its going to do what you think without putting in some work ahead of time. You have to teach the dog what you want it to do when you give it some juice. So with that being said there's different ways to do that. So my question how bad is she getting hung up? Pm me if you'd rather that.

Y’all shock um to get away from you then you shock them to come here poor dogs don’t know whether they are sacking groceries or carrying out. I think some of the handlers need shocked.

You don’t make a hound overnight pushen that button.

Leg work moving them out paired with a light tickle as they are getting out of there to start out. Eventually just the tickle will get her out of there. You can’t just start shocking on dogs though and expect them to understand what’s going on without the previous work put in.

It's amazing how many people think the dog is thinking the same thing they're thinking when they press the button.

Too many times that button gets pushed just because we are aggravated. Dog doesn't have a clue what's wrong.

under used

The best two buttons on an e-collar and the most under used are tone and vibrate.

I have thought about moving a dog along from time to time but in the end most of the time the dog shows me it has known more about what's best than I do. If I had to move a dog along much I think I would just get a better dog anyways. Maybe moving a dog along can help 1 but I don't see how it could very much.

All you are doing by moving a dog along with a shock or tone is making it jump from track to track till it finds one easy enough to tree.

It won’t make it finish the one it’s on.

So do you know for a fact the dog was on a coon? How do you know with 100% certainty that its messing with an old coon track and not some sort of off game? Most guys would be unwilling to admit their "great dog" is messing with fox on those tracks that they pick n pick n pick in the same area. You guys must only have a handful of off game critters. I only use the collar when the dog has been messing on a coon track in the same area for longer than most would ever put up with 1 fooling with it. And contrary to what most want to think about using the e-collar for this, the dog knows most of the time what its getting lit up for. If you've never attended an e-collar clinic you should. You'll have to understand what is being taught there for bird dogs and switch it over to hounds but my my what an informative demonstration it can be. If you use the e-collar correctly you can do many many things way out of the old school mentality realm.

And this is regarding everyone:

Just because that's not how you've always done things doesn't mean its wrong. Sometimes its the simplest answer that evades you that you seek. I've stated this before on here, you can take a wide open trailing dog and make it almost stone silent. You can make 1 be a rattle head if you want to. The only people holding you back in training is "YOU".

I think you can use an e-collar to teach a dog to drift off older tracks. I think you can use an e-collar for just about anything and it works well. However- if you find you have to use the e-collar to get them to find a track, push a track, stay at a tree, leave your feet, come to you, etc..... by all means do it- but please do not breed to that dog.

If a dog is made through electricity it does not have the dna we want passed on to produce good natural dogs.

I am sorry I forget I come from a time when we trained dogs to win major hunts with high scores without shocking or training collars.

I apologize.
