Knocking coons out

Will it hurt a young dog not knocking coons out to them?
This coming spring and summer I’m not planning on killing any coons .
We’ve got a open season here in Alabama but I want to give them a chance to raise young.

It shouldn't bother one. Lots of variables.... But in general if you have to drop coons out over and over to keep them treeing you have a junk dog. I'd rather spend one bullet on a dog that won't tree naturally than 100 bullets on 100 coons trying to make a dog tree.

Bred to tree , should tree!

I have taken several over they y ears that I got back that were sometimes gotten for pets/house dogs. Some were bought to be coyote dogs or maybe people thought they wanted to start coonhunting and didn’t. Anyway take them to the woods and they tree, a few even were treeing with another dog and shot out the coon which they had never encountered so didn’t realize a shot meant coon came floating out Of sky! Other dog could be fighting and kept on treeing! Had some others that were trained alone and would learn to tree coon , and tree coon after coon without any being shot out!

Would a real possum treer ever stop treeing 'em if you just petted him up real good and led him away?

Killing game

A true tree dog does not need game killed for them to tree. Killing game is for the handlers satisfaction more than a need for the dog. I used to hunt all year and NEVER shoot any game out and NO it did not affect the dogs desire to tree. Dave

I agree, I don’t think you should HAVE to knock coons out to one anymore than you shouldn’t correct a dog at the tree.
I think dogs, are all different. I think some killing over them is good for them but not a necessity.
I know I can see a difference in my rabbit dogs after killing a few over them.
I Have had several females in my life that would not pay any attention to a dead rabbit at all, could care less about them, but every now and then they would go nuts over one I shot.

Amen to what you said...a coon dog is born just like a star is born...

If everyone held to that standard there wouldn’t be many culls...

To make a great dog better we need to hunt them a minimum amount of time and correct handling a must...

They don’t need much hunting to get results...

Dogs

Any top athlete puts in the time and work to be great minimun effort gives you basic results average gets you average results or less a dog that's gets a minimum amount of hunting ends up being average or less, the winners put in the time and work to do so, minimum effort does not equal great in any sport....or occupation....

A running dog rarely if ever catches a deer, rabbit or fox but they still run them.

Out of all the young dogs I have trained or hunted with over 47 years, I have only ever seen 1 that shooting coons out to made a difference.

Thank goodness I personally have never had an issue with a young dog needing fur in its mouth.

Time and a place for everything.. Fall is the time to put the fur in their mouths consistently.. I shoot a lot of coons, but I have them and I'm a hide hunter as dumb as that is right now.

I personally lay off shooting any coons out to my dog from April 1 thru about June 1 due to kittens in the den.

If shooting coons out to your hound hurts it, you need to start over any ways.. Cull that sucker out of the gene pool.. You should not have to kill a bunch of coons to a dog, but I think it's how you get the best out of a hound..

I have an 8 month old pup just starting here at the house and when she starts treeing I will knock several out to her this summer

My dogs tree coons and possums almost every night we're out. I can't recall the last time I killed either. They do sometimes catch a possum on the ground.

I shoot them out in season, that being said, the one thing I see hunting in comp hunts, I rarely see a slick tree over my dog. Mine want the coon and there's no doubt in my opinion it makes them more accurate. Can't say that with a lot of the tree grabbers I've hunted against. Of course once the leaves are on they're all world beaters.

You're right Dave, once a dog knows what a coon is he only needs one every now and then.. Most top hounds never get the coon, but the owners tell you they shot them out all the time.. Do you really think these guys with the top hounds are going to set around and tell you how they trained their dogs?

Edwardfasteddy

Thank you for your reply to my post, It means a lot for someone with your background to agree with my opinion regarding killing coons. I grew up in an area of thin coons and heavy hunting pressure, that has a lot to do with my not wanting to kill every coon a dog trees, they absolutely DO NOT need coons killed to tree coons. Dave

Thank you Dave, I've been messing around with hounds close to 50 years and just found out I don't know that much about them at all! I change my thoughts on training on about every litter I train... An old dog can learn new tricks!
