I have posted and asked this question a lot over past 15 years or so but I just keep going back to it because it just really intrigues me. I am a squirrel hunter only. I don’t coon hunt anymore. I have hunted ever type cur and feist you can find. I have had some good ones and have been with some good ones. This year I hunted a cur in woods that has squirrels but they are not loaded with them. My season didn’t go real well. I know a guy that hunts a treeing Walker an he consistently kills 4-6 squirrels a every time he hits this patch. I have hunted with some other hounds this year that really did a fine job. All the hound I have seen hunted on squirrels hunted about like a cur dog. I know a lot of people talk about going to cold trees, dog going to deep, and dog not timbering but isn’t all those better than not treeing at all? Iam not all about killing but would like to get off work and tree couple in evening. If you all were going to hunt squirrel with a hound is there any particular breed that might be better than others or line that might be better. Any advice would be helpful.

I think you may be looking for individual dogs not a certain line of hounds the ones I have seen on squirrel were non typical for the breed I've seen a few in about any color just not a lot of any one breed,the men that competition hunt seen to like the Bone or Bone X cross dogs good luck in your search, I'm trying to make a combo dog now out of a young walker female.....

I used to hunt squirrels with a Hammer bred bluetick years ago. She was accurate and very patient with me while I circled the tree trying to spot a little fluff of grey against grey tree bark. One time I thought she'd made a mistake treeing on a sapling no more than 6" diameter and only about 20' tall. No sign of a squirrel. She looked at me in disgust for not shooting while she did all the work. I leaned on the tree as I started to tell her to keep hunting. It was hollow with a tiny hole I hadn't noticed and almost fell over when I leaned on it. Needless to say the squirrel flew out of the hole and we got it. I miss that dog a lot.
