I wonder how many coon hunters comp hunt simply for the enjoyment or excitement that they get from it and how many comp hunt for the money won?
What percentage of hunters would not hunt if there was no money to be won?
How many hunters comp hunt to boost their ego? If you are being honest, does it make you feel good to beat the other dogs?
What percentage keep track of their winning by how much money they have won?
For these, is it the actual money or just a way to keep track by the "lists".
How many keep track of their winning by how many titles they have put on a dog?
How many people keep track of their winning by how many Major Hunts they have won?
How many keep track of their winning by how many times their picture is on the interweb or in the magazine.

For me it is beating the other dog. We all would be lying if it wasn’t about beating the other dog. I have won my share at the local level. I play with my own money. It’s not much, but am content with that. I know what kind of dog I hunt. So I guess don’t spend money you don’t have . An don’t enter the dog you have in hunts that is beyond it’s means. That’s what is so great about this sport, there is a place for everyone.

I for one won’t go to town just to say I was there if I go it will be because I think I got a winner. Because I raise my own dogs it’s along time between winners. Now it’s like on a rainy day I can look at the awards and pictures and it means somthing to me but nothing to anybody else. Matter of fact you can win a major hunt today and in a month go to a local club and ask who won it and nobody knows.

I hunt for the pleasure of it for sure. I love seeing a dog do it's job flawlessly. I go to the hunts to measure my dog against what is showing up. I do love winning and the hardware that comes with it. It's a way of showing the talent and work you and your dog has put in. I won't lie though the thought of winning money for doing what I love is sweet 😊

There are both dogs and people around here that most folks wouldn't hunt with for free. Somebody's gotta put up with them for a couple hours if they show up with an entry 😎

I haven’t entered in a money hunt since 2015. It’s definitely not about the money for me, it’s about competing and trying to beat the other dog(s), hunting with other people/dogs and meeting new people.

Lol. There is a lot of truth in your post, just hope that I don't get stuck with those kind of dogs or men. Myself, I hunt for the fun and enjoyment both competition and pleasure hunting, the money would not be a factor for me, but could be for Some folks. I have spent way to much money on this sport to ever break even, much less come out with a profit. Coon hunting was and will always be a hobby for me, if it was a job, I would quit, no one could afford to pay me enough to hunt for money. Dave

Just a few short years ago I was an extremely good athlete. I was one of those guys that was absolutely obsessed with competition spent hours and hours a day in the weight room and on the track honing my craft. Then the day came when I couldn’t compete anymore. I’ll be honest with you I always thought dad was crazy hunting 250 or 300 nights a year until that hunger to compete again came back. When your a hardcore competitor it’s something that you can’t get away from. It’s like dope you’ve gotta have it. After the world hunt I’ve kind taken a break from coon hunting in general not having Demon anymore kinda took it out of me. The last few weeks I’ve found myself pacing around the house like a crack addict lol. If you took the money or the glory or any recognition out of it I would still be there. I just love to see who has the best dog that night any night. It’s not about the pride or money or recognition or anything like that for me. I’m just addicted to the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when your headed to the woods and there is a lot on the line. When I was in College I made made several trips to big events With Mafia and a Gyp Called Maxine that I literally had just enough money to get there and pay entry fees and maybe buy a burger. Gas to get home had to be won. Put an 18 or 19 year old kid that’s addicted to competition With a good dog in a must win situation and see where he comes out at. If they did away with hunts I would quit No doubt about it probably buy a pasture full of game birds lol.

I love to see that kind of drive in a man, to me it's what separates the leaders from the followers. I grew up very competitive and it served me well. I always wanted to win the right way in every t thing I done. Winning by default or on a technicality was like losing to me. I want my dog to be better and prove it, not get the win handed to him, just like myself, I want to win because I was just better at what I was competing for. If you are going to be a consistent winner, you NEVER count on luck. Luck is just being prepared when opportunity presents itself. Dave

Henry Ford once said that the first automobile race happened 5 min after the second Ford rolled off of the assembly line. I bet that the first comp hunt happened right after the first 2 coonhunters met.
