Posted the same thoughts previously on a rule change discussion.100% agree.
He has been around and forgot more than a lot of us know.
I guess us older hunters remember how hard it was to make a nite champion. Didn't whine and try to change rules to suit the dogs we hunted .We bred our dogs to be better then the others period.
When you did make a nt ch everyone had to come hunt with it. True accomplishment.

He made the same point I have. Dogs are made to fit the loopholes in the rules or use faults that the guys back in the day would have culled them for. I remember having two cast of grade dogs and more times than not the grade dogs were high scoring dog of hunt. I think in those days minimum wage I made $2.80 an hour for hard work get a $100 paycheck a week. So looking at empty trees or listening to a babbling dog wasn't somthing you wanted to do.

No hides no Christmas !!

Only way you could sell a dog is if it showed the buyer coon eyes !!

I don’t understand why you think it’s done differently today? Dogs was bred to fit the rules from the 1st set of rules, change the rules change the dog, some are smart enough to change the dog before the rules change (insider trading maybe)?

I know how you breed dogs just like I do and we hunt what we breed and am pretty sure if hides got high again we would get a good check. That's the point I am trying to make and Jim Meeks article says the same thing. Dogs were trained to tree every coon they got near back then did not even worry about the rules.

Tar you're on a roll today. A Tennessee reddog man might not realize Rat Attack and his daddy were the start of the 1000 circle points. You could breed either one to a billy goat and get something that would tree. Might be a fence post but it would tree.

You tell them Tar! Lol. Dave. P.S. Wasn't he one of those big time yesterday dogs? Flavor of the day wonder dog of his time! Ha,ha,ha. Today like yesterday, one better not change his recipe too much, or the cake might end up being plain old bread. Dave

That's why there are different kind of car races you don't take a dragster to a dirt track race and ukc don't have plan B !! The others you can't minus out and somebody's going to win no matter what.

Guess I'm like the old hippie. Liked the dogs of yesterday a lot better than the majority of dogs today. Better track dogs meant more accuracy. People that took competition hunting serious usually had good dogs but a lot of pleasure hunters came to the hunts just to see certain dogs go that they had heard about and hoped to draw them. The pleasure hunters usually had a dog that would tree a coon but wasn't trained for competition and by that they would just open the dogbox door and turn them out just to participate instead of just spectating. Plus I still like the old 3 minute babbling rule. I'm aware times have changed but imo not for the best.

I'm not trying to say anything. I said it. Now go back and reread my post. I said better than the majority of todays dogs. There are exceptions to most everything. For an example I hunted with a whole lot of Sacket jr dogs and I actually saw 3 that could run a track the way I like so there are exceptions.
A lot of younger hunters don't know the difference because they have never seen the difference. I mean no disrespect to anyone but am curious of your age.
I had rather debate than argue.

Oh my goodness, I hunted at the Futurity against Sunrise on a late round one night. He won by making 5 trees in a 400 yard circle. They all got circled and we never saw a coon. That was back in the days of super quick pack dogs.

So you're saying you caught him on a bad night and he still won ? Were you there the nights he won two supetstakes or two trucks ? I think he stumbled onto a coon or two those nights lol.

Old Rat owns reproduction records in both UKC and PKC that will likely never be broken. God knows how many world champions and that doesn't even include Sun and Habit.

Well spoken, haters are going to hate, never blame the female side or the fact they made a bad cross. All crosses don't work, but when it does look out. The gloom and boomers all see just that, while the shakers and movers see progress. I DON'T BREED DOGS, but there are some dedicated breeders today breeding dogs that Don't take a backseat to any dog/s of the past. Dave

I love the bad habit dogs cold or hot tracks they run to catch and are accurate. Throw away the papers a dog like that will eat my feed. Habit and sunrise were out of littermate sisters that went back to rattler.

I'm 55 years old I was around for 3 hours hunts Tar Rattler was made a Grand Night Champion right around my house by the Wootens before he got famous.I was hunting when Lipper was around Nailor Swamp Rooster Packman just to name a few.I have judged Superstakes World Hunts in several Registries I know what a Coondog is I have hunted with a pile of so called Coon Dogs but I have seen very few in my entire life that could be called that.Ole Sambo that was made famous at the World Hunt is still winning anywhere he is set down North or South he is a Grandson to Bad Habit he can hold his own against any dog that ever lived he is a World class Coondog I have seen him have a bad night they all do you can't judge a dog by one night.
