From what it is telling you. There is a problem with the GPS circuit for it to loose GPS signal.
Three major components to that circuit. The GPS antenna on the collar. The wire that runs through the black rubber housing to the batter/circuit box. Or a problem on the GPS circuit inside the the Circuit housing.
Now you didn't say what model collar you have and I am describing mainly a TT collar. All collars have the same three components but just located in different places. The DC 40 is different because the GPS antenna is located in the housing below the neck.
About the only thing you can do is update it. Look at the strap closely where it goes into the batter housing and see if the rubber is cracked which generally leads to the wire being cracked.
Repairs would be if under warranty. Return to dealer or Garmin for warranty replacement with no charge. If out of warranty then Garmin would replace it with another collar for a fee of around $100. The models they are still replacing are T5's and TT15's both mini and regular.
