5 of today's dogs to = 1 of the good old dogs because that's about how many trees most today make before you see a coon is 5. Lol

How do you calculate "worth"? One of the stylish, super quick, slobber slinging comp dogs of today is worth what 5 of those plain Jane hide dogs of yesteryear were worth.
You might get $1,000 worth of hides during a year with a top hide dog but you can now win $1,000 in 2 or 3 months with a top comp dog.

Yeah but who would have paid $50,000 for a dog back then even if the dog wins a $100,000 he will never be ahead due to the expense of playing the game nowadays. Ole back in the day at the most was a $200 puppy and he made his owner a $1,000 a year right at Christmas time.

Even if you figured $20 hide price avg back then it's still only 50 coon a season. Sorry I'll take today's dog and tree them 50 coon in a few weeks not take all season to do it.

Here we go trying to compare Apple's and oranges, yesterday vs today dogs! I owned a couple of really good dogs of yesterday that would be worth a small fortune in today's dog prices. I can say the same for real estate, guns, and trucks, etc. Some of those yesterday dogs cost as much then as a good building lot for a house cost 500 to 1500 hundred dollars. Today's dogs are cheaper across the board [ yes they are exceptions ] I can buy a very good dog today cheaper than any decent building lot costs today. All this comparing is just opinionating, it's fun to read, but has little face value. We all have owned or seen dogs if yesterday that we sure would like to have today. All hobbies are just an expense, it's the love of the sport that is true valve. Dave

Dave I seen several $10,000+ checks given for dogs back in the early 80's that was a lot of money back then. I hunted several nights with all those dogs was they worth it ? Not to me but they was to the guy that bought them lol.



Now for a funny story. Aw Norman ( coon stopper ) used to catch us all broke and buy our dogs cheap then flip them. He bought a bran new extended cab Chevy pickup when the extended cab first came out. He bought a dog off of don hall deltons brother and flipped it we all went hunting that night he and don was in the front. Delton and I was in the back. Aw said don I hope you aren't mad about how much money I made on that dog. Don said Aw I ain't going to be ney as mad as the guy that bought him lol.

Lol. I liked that story, it sums it up very well, value is and always will be in the eye of the beholder. One man's trash is another man's treasure kind of thing. I have paid a big price for a dog that ended up being something I just could not like and give it away for free. We all are different in what we will accept and what we won't accept in anything, especially a dog. Lol. Dave

I guess its nice to live in past !! but you will never live in the present by doing so !! I can take my competition dogs out and tree 1/2 dozen coon in a couple hrs sometimes it don't take that long.. old people don't plunder on past look for what you need for future..jmo

I have been hunting since 1979 and always could find a good dog back then. I got out of it in 1996 until 2014. It took me a ton of culling and alot of $ to actually find a HOUND. Last August i found the Hound that pleases me and is accurate like the 80's, but can move a track like it's on fire.

I think the way we judge yesterday dogs vs today's dogs really depends on what part of the country one lives in. For example, hunting the mountains like I have done all my hunting life, we demand accuracy in the dogs we hunt. We don't have thick coons in these mountains and never have, no one wants to hunt a slick tree dog in these mountains. Where coon are thick, you can overlook some slicks not in these mountains. Dogs that make the grade here have to be accurate. Honestly, I am seeing more good dogs today than I ever seen in yesterday's dogs. I always bought the best dogs I could find and a real good dog is much easier to find today in my opinion. Dave

If they will go hunting in this junk I hunt in. Get struck and treed. And stay till this old fat boy gets there. And have a coon and not pull me down going back to the truck and I can drink my coffee going home they are good enough for me.

Been hunting since the late 50's with a couple of time outs. Have had a lot of sorry dogs, several dogs that could tree a coon and a couple of coon dogs. I will say it is easier now to find a dog that trees coon fairly consistently but just as hard as ever to find that dog that is exceptional at treeing all kinds of coon, cold old tracks, winding coon, dry conditions, wet conditions, windy conditions, etc. That dog is very hard to find. I will also say I have never been able or had the desire to pay a large sum of money for a dog, so that may be why I haven't had a 100 good dogs like it seems some have.

Mr. Tom, I don't think it would matter how much money one has or had, I don't think anyone could find, much less buy 100 top coondogs. I have hunted over 50 years and my hunting partner has hunted over 60 years and together we have not seen or hunted with 20 top coondogs. We both have hunted and owned a few top coondogs and I mean a few, most likely under 10 together. Now, we may have higher standards than a lot of folks, but top dogs are rare in my book. We both have owned several really good dogs but they were not what either of us call a top coondog. The ones you see talking about owning all these top dogs are either settling for less or just plain ole bull dooking. Lol. Dave
