Time Catches Up

I've been thinking of doing a little hunting, but with the deep snow around here I thought I better see how I could still use snow shoes, haven't tried them for a couple of years. NOT GOOD went about 600 to 700 yards and that was enough. For you who have never had the fun of hunting on snow shoes you can't imagine the FUN. LOL!

Bob

Do you ever tree any coons when the snow is that deep? Dave

Just get the Eskimos to go get your dogs. Don't eat the whale blubber tho.

I never wore snow shoes, but I waded 575 yds to a tree last night in knee deep water. She had the coon.

During the rut last of Jan. through Feb the boars move but right now it's hard to find any that move much. We have had warm weather for the last few days and sometimes you will find one moving in old farm sites. Sometimes coyote dogs will push one out of a cattail slough ( slough with heavy long thick grass covered with deep snow.) Coon will semi hibernate in these for a week or two when weather gets bad. When hides were high, hide hunters would hunt them in the daytime. Had to have really tough dogs because sometimes could run into 5 coon or more in a group. It never was my idea of coon hunting. But if you were just after the money I know people that could get 200 to 300 hundred coon a season. Didn't necessary have to use a coon hound. Any dog that would fight a coon was used.

You've never lived til you have tried to lead a couple dogs thru a thicket on snow shoes. About 15 years ago on my way home from a weekend hunt I stopped the truck and threw my snowshoes into the ocean and vowed to never put a pair on again lol.

Spring is coming Bob hang in there...

I hear you loud and clear, I have never had a pair of snowshoes and hope that I never need them. We got about 12 inches of snow a few weeks back and man I hated to wade that stuff feeding horses, etc. I honestly do not know how you guys put up with that deep snow for months, I guess it all seems normal if you are used to getting that much snow. Lol. Dave

I Hunt off snow shoes a fair amount in the winter.............just not hunting for coon! Rather the swamp ghost of the north (aka snowshoe hare). It's really good exercise and beats trying to wallow through it without them! Hunted off them for a week the 1st week of Dec. in northern Maine. Then we got a bunch of rain and warm weather that melted most of it. More coming in a few days.

We don't worry much about water moccasins, rattlers or gators around here😉

Get into mid to late Feb. and the boar coon will start moving on the warmer nights checking for sows in heat.

Bob I've been thinking you need a new winter hobby I'm pretty sure those cold temps are freezing up your brain! Have you thought about taking up quilting, painting or maybe even just some old fashioned whittling? Think of all the projects you could make sitting by the fire.
If you need to get away and be in the woods our door is always open it was 60° here today and mid thirties tonight.
