Alright Folks... This pertains to a little squirrel dog I'm hunting, but could be the same issue with a coon.

Anyone ever break a dog from running away with the game once knocked out? This little squirrel dog will take it and run with it. After a a minute or two, she'll bring it back to me but it just aggrevates me to be at the mercy of the dog. I want one to either bring it to me or just grab it and stay in one place until I come and get it.

I could tie her, but after a minute or so she still brings me the squirrels. If tied, I would lose more squirrels running away once they hit the ground.

She's a bang up squirrel dog and this is her only real fault, so not looking for any drastic measures.

Any ideas?

Got no help. Got a jack Russell the same way only he doesn't bring them back, he digs a hole and gives them a burial. The first time I knocked squirrel out to him I had two up a tree, shot the first one out and before I got the second one out he had the first in ground. He enjoys my buddy's blue tick boo hooing after him with the squirrel. Watching them two is to funny

I have a bluetick that done the same thing. I just shocked her a few times and she got the idea of what I wanted and she isn't to bad now but it was terrible at first.

easy fix !! just think about it for awhile.. you will come up with a fix.. had many a young dog did the same ..

Thought about playing fetch with a Squirrel Tail in the backyard and rewarding her with a treat when she brings it to me.

She's 3 years old, so not a young dog but shouldn't be set in her ways.

She tree's a ton of squirrels and my little boy and I are having a blast with her. If this can't be easily be fixed, I'll just have to deal with it. LOL

Not looking to take any drastic measures.

Tie her up and practice on your shooting. Lol really tho, if was mine she would get tied every time, I dont let my dogs touch a squirrel unless I've destroyed it with my bad aim.

It's not my aiming Pak LOL. These young boys I take just use me as a limb shaker to make the squirrels jump, ride to the woods and food. LOL

I told them if they had money I'd have to charge them for being a Guide. Picking them up, supplying their ammunition, dog, hunting spot and buying their snacks and lunches. LOL

We sure have fun though.

Just my way of handling this: Teach the dog to come to you whenever you call him. Starts in the yard with a long cord and probably will need a correction collar at some point to back up what you say. When you have the dog trained to come whenever, wherever you call him just call him when he picks up the squirrel. If he doesn't come you must reinforce the command. It will work and it also makes a retriever out of the dog.
