Last week while coyote calling in NM, I stepped within a foot of a 4 1/2 foot long rattler while sneaking in to make a call before good light. The camera was rolling and I don't recall what audio I gave him. On the second call, I motioned Steve to back up against a cedar in order to break up his outline. When looking into the cedar for a half grown cottontail that I spooked over him, he found a rattler coiled within arm's reach. I killed a third rattler that was sliding across a ranch road when going to the third call.
Yesterday morning before daylight on a ranch in SW TX when trying to open a wire gap that we had not used in a number of years, Steve stepped on a rattler. I think the only reason that it did not bite him was that the grass was too thick. Later that morning I killed another healthy rattler crossing a ranch road.
Three events when someone should have been bitten by a rattler in a week is a little more excitement that I like...sooner or later the snake is going to win.

Last year we hardly seen any snakes this year they are everywhere had dogs bit twice hogs ain't doing their job.

I've come to the conclusion that snakes don't really want to bite. We kill 2 or 3 cottonmouths every time we go hunting. We've never been bitten and haven't had a dog bitten in years. Every snake we kill is trying to get away.

I think every snake is different, some rattle and some don't. It is rare to find one that doesn't get pretty aggressive when you are trying to smash his head. Rattlesnakes are not like mocassins or copperheads in that they are generally a little more aggressive and way more poisonous.
I average getting at least one hound bitten a year. I vaccinate with the rattlesnake shots and believe that it helps with swelling and infection which kills most dogs. Old timers say that you want a dog hit from the shoulders forward, possibly worse location is in the big muscling in the hindlegs. The decay of muscle tissue is what overloads the liver and kills the dog.
We were in a very bad location to deal with a snake bite in West Texas as over 100 miles from any Dr., miles and an hour from paved road and no cell phone service for 50 miles. Ideally, we would call for a medivac chopper but without cell phone that is impossible.

Please be careful, a bite in a location that remote could be fatal. Hospital Bill usually runs over 100k, not cheap. Lol. Dave

My friend has had this dog about 2 months and he has been bitten 3 times. Twice while hunting and once at the pen. Probably Copperheads each time. He's only hunted the dog 5 times. I told him his dog was hunting snakes, lol.

I have had many bitten by snakes. The rattler is the worse. I’ve had 6+ bitten by rattlers and only one died, he was bitten in the head. I think the swelling cut off his wind/air. That was the second time he was bitten by a rattler. Both time in my yard and both times the snake died.

We had the same dog bit 14 times in one summer when we were kids and hunted every night. Only had one that one old dog that would tree coons and hunted him every time we went. Hunting a moderate amount in my country its not uncommon to have to deal with a couple snakebit dogs per summer.

Don't they have rattlesnakes in Illinois? Pretty sure they do, along with copperhead and cottonmouths. We have them in Tennessee, one of the reasons that I quit hunting in the summertime. Dave

Even in an area they do rattle i know they won't sound off when wet. Went to a wildlife show at a sportsman convention and the handler put a big rattled on the tarp and poked him till he rattled. Then picked him up quickly dunked him in water and set him back down he was making the motion but no sound until about 10 minutes.

I wear Chippeewa (not sure about spelling) most of the time when hunting dogs and hunting country where I know there are lots of snakes. I had a buddy who was struck above the snake boot and in the lower part of the thigh. It sure made him sick, luckily we were not far from a hospital.
Years ago we were going bobcat hunting below Dilley, TX and killed 13 rattlesnakes before we turned the dogs loose. We decided to wait at an old ranch house in hopes that when it cooled off snakes would settle down. After about two hours the temperature dropped about 10 degrees and we started hunting about midnight. We hunted until almost daylight and didn't see another snake. Oh, and we did catch three bobcats.

Mr. Roy, We ALL have some of those 2 legged snakes. Lol. According to the Illinois DNR there are 4 different venomous snake species found in Illinois. Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Timber Rattlesnake, and Massasauga Rattlesnake. Dave.
