I feed mine Purina Puppy Chow. Right now I have 8 big, fat, 6 week old pups. The gyp is also fat while raising these pups.

It's a good idea to switch her over to a good quality puppy food with a higher fat/protein ratio now. Her food intake will need to increase significantly as her pregnancy progresses and while whelping pups. Later in pregnancy she will eat less at a time but much more, there isn't alot of room for large meals.

What is the logic behind putting extra lbs on the female? She is heavy enough with pups, I understand a good feed with some extra calcium to produce milk, but extra lbs just makes her more miserable in hot weather, just wondering.

If a female is overweight, she will have problems having pups. They need to get plenty of exercise also but be careful in this weather that she doesn't get too hot. She needs muscles, not extra fat. And giving them a fish oil pill every day is cheaper than a can of mackeral although all good puppy chows these days have Omegas added.

Buy her a fan.
They just need the extra calories for development of the pups so their own bodies are not depleted during pregnancy and nursing. Most fed a good balanced puppy food will gain a healthy weight needed for pregnancy, increased blood volume, good fetal development of puppies, and proper milk production. All is dependent upon the dams body and the nutrients it has on hand without an increase in healthy calories the females body has to use it's own stores of fat and even bone mass. No one is advocating buying her a bag of Doritos or stealing Tar's box of honey buns. Puppy food has the extra fat, protein and DHA needed and as the pregnancy progresses. The need for extra intake of calories and nutrients from them increases as pregnancy progesses and continues throughout the whelping process.
Many hunt pregnant females in earlier pregnancy which is fine if they were regularly hunted before and later exercise is still important but can be lower impact walks, running in the yard ect. On a side note calcium is great but too much can also lead to bone issues in pups(to fast of growth) I usually supplement with tums during delivery and you can give some cottage cheese and beef liver ever couple days while nursing.
Many so called "brood" females are way over weight before breeding which can lead to problems through the whole process many don't take or have heat cycle issues and when bred loose more pups when they are born. Typically the easiest deliveries and pup raising come from females who are already at a healthy weight, worm free and good physical shape before they are bred.
Jen

Couldn't have said it better Redneck! Folks that haven't tried it can criticize it but I had a female that very rarely had a litter of less than 10 pups seen her raise a litter of 13 and we always fed her that diet and raised some nice pups don't knock if you haven't tried! Just sayn'

Start increasing the amount of feed you give her half way through the fifth week of pregnancy.
