Question for guys that have a thyroid dog

I've got a thyroid dog. He takes 1 pill in the morning and one in the evening. I try to give the pills as close to 12 hours apart as possible. I feed in the evening and I was wondering if you guys give your dog it's thyroid pill at the same time you feed or not. My son and my wife are on thyroid medicine and they are not suppose to take their pill at the same time they eat. They are suppose to take the pill at least 1 hour before or after they eat and I was wondering if that holds true for dogs as well.

My dad is like you and feeds of the evening and he usually gives the dog his pill when he feeds

I have no idea why or what it does but no you are not supposed to give it to them with food.

Overtime this is what works best for me. First thing in morning prior to going to work, 7 am (pill #1). Later that evening (pill #2), 7pm. Go hunting come back in then 10-11pm feed the dogs. It seems to work for me. Good luck.

My Vet told me anytime you give 'medicine',it works better with food.
9am,then 9pm or after hunting

that's a pretty blanket statement coming from a vet. Some medicines need to be taken with food to buffer the digestive system. Thyroid meds will work better given 30 minutes to an hour before feeding.

The thyroid hormone is to be given away from food. It is not absorbed correctly if given with food. It does make a difference , I've done it both ways. Without food is best. Watch the jean Dodd video, she even states it in that video.

because thyroxine binds with calcium and soy give pill 1 hour before feeding or 3 hours after feeding for best results and close to 12 hours apart as you can .

My dog's having some symptoms of thyroid problems and planning to visit her vet once I'm free. But I hope she doesn't have such illness. Very useful infos here. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for all of the responses guys. Based on how humans are suppose to take thyroid meds I assumed it was best to be taken without food but the vet didn’t say anything about it so I wanted to get some advise.

Thankfully this wasn't the case for my dog. But anyways, It's such a great help especially on giving awareness on how the meds should be done. Gotta share it for my other friends in case they're having same problems too with their dogs.
