When to get a puppy

Im getting a walker puppy soon and this will be my first dog/coonhound. Tho My dad has bird dogs that i basically take care of and we brought them home when they were 6 weeks old. Is 6 weeks a good time to bring a coonhound home or should i wait longer, this puppy is gonna have to learn to not kill our cats and it has no vaccines what so ever so i will have to figure out what i have to get it also. So what do u guys think, get it at 6 weeks, or wait a little longer? By the way, its my friend in schools puppies so i dont have to get it on a set date

I’d get a finished dog before I got a puppy if I were you. You could get both as well. But it will be a frustrating process for about a year and a half to two years just my opinion

Pup

I generally like to let pups go at 7-8 weeks old, by then they have had their first shot and a couple of wormings. Start off with the 5-1 shots. Make sure they get at least three Parvo shots one or two wont do. Don't worry bout the cats if they grow up around them they may hassle them abit. Give them the first 5-1 at 6 to 8 wks old, just ask the vet or google for the shot schedule. If you like messing with pups that's great, some people don't have the patience. I prefer to raise them gives you a better perspective and bond with the dog. Good luck and don't worry bout anyone's opinion enjoy that pup!

Vaccination schedule

Puppies receive most of their vaccinations every two to four weeks until they are at least 14 weeks old. Some vaccinations are given as a combination, such as the DHLPPC, which helps protect against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvo and corona. Other vaccinations are administered one at a time.

If your dog is over 16 weeks old and isn’t up-to-date on shots, or if you’re not sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry: Your vet may recommend starting the vaccination process again. You can use this chart to help you keep track of when your puppy needs which shots:

DHLPPC
•First vaccination: 6 to 8 weeks
•Second vaccination: 9 to 11 weeks
•Third vaccination: 12 to 14 weeks
•Fourth vaccination: 16 to 17 weeks
•Booster shots: 12 months

Bordetella
•First vaccination: 14 weeks
•Booster shots: 6 months

Rabies
•First vaccination: 16 weeks (varies by state)
•Booster shots: 12-36 months

Giardia
•First vaccination: 14 weeks
•Second vaccination: 17 weeks
•Booster shots: 12 months

Lyme
•First vaccination: 14 weeks
•Second vaccination: 17 weeks
•Booster shots: 12 months

We use to always get puppies when they were 6 wks old; but now in PA, u can't sell one until they're 8 wks old.
