What separates the winners in comp hunts from the losers?

I think there are a lot of youngsters and not so youngsters that enjoy training a dog. The seeing how it stacks up in competition. Have your really given much thought on what separates the winners from the losers. I know a lot of people working and enjoying their dog on a pleasure hunting basis. Stop and think, could that dog win a competition hunt. The answer is both simple to see and it is simple to achieve. That is if your Coon Hunting and not letting the dog run the show.

Look across the board at all the coon hound registries and look at the scores that Night Champions are being made with. Look and the scores winning hundreds if not thousands of dollars every week. They tree one or two coon and do very well. Well, Heck you say! Your dog can tree one or two coon any night of the week. Your probably right. But can it do it without making any minus points according to the rules. Don't go hunting with the thought in mind you have to train your dog to tree coon. Lets his/her genetics do that. You take the scorecard of your choosing and you train them not to get minus points while treeing that coon. Eliminate the minus from your hunting vocabulary and the Trophies will come.

Your absolutely right Bruce but after you get all of that done then you have to take them. I have a hound that can win anything anywhere, but he doesn't get to go. Look at the guys that win constantly, they go to all of them. If there dog looked like crap last night he still gets entered the next night. If mine looked bad one night we are going home the next. That makes a huge difference.

In the big hunts...luck and your dog being "on" that night because everyone has a coon dog. Just look at any sport. The person who is focused and has the right attitude will win on any given night.

Don't forget the other major factor in it.. You have to have the money for gas, entry fees, hotels maybe that's why most don't go to the hunts

Nope, not even close.

Luck plays a role no doubt, especially at the bigger hunts where your draw matters.

But an every day winner is exactly like Bruce said. A dog that doesn't draw minus is hard to beat.

This is my list:

1. Drive/Hunt

2. Accuracy

3. Consistency

4. No minus

You find a dog with all that and he/she is a winner and will win a ton regardless of luck.

PS: When you do find it let me know and I will buy it

Having a good dog is important but what makes the difference between winners and looser is most often the handler

Remember: When saying eliminate minus from scorecard, a lot of times it’s not the dog giving the minus, it’s the one with the leash tied around his shoulders. How many more hunts could you have won if you would of just kept your mouth closed! I know I would of won a lot more.

25 years ago you could just about guess who was gonna win a cast because of the dog....but nowadays you know who's probably gonna win because of who the handler is.

What separates the winners in comp hunts from the losers?

Here is my opinion.

The formula for winning is a combination of dog and handler

1st part dog: consistent night after night. Get gone go hunting and accurate.

2nd part handler: handler must know the rules and his dog. Handler has to know his\her dog if they are going to consistently and accurately call them.

All dogs will have an off night, and the same goes for the handler. But the winners don't let one bad night stop them from going back.

Luck can come in to play on any given night but it doesn't factor into the consistent winning formula.

Ringtail

You nailed it, know your dog and focus only on your dog! Know the rules, call your dog and not worry about the other dogs. If your dog is any good, you will win your share. Dave

I thought money for your own guide at a big hunt was crucial? 😏

I like to train if you got a top dog word travels fast I enjoy injecting a good dog into a rich victim I get more money that way than going to the hunts and if the dogs a winner I still get some credit and possibly anouther sale lol. And I can set in my chair and watch the play by play.

I agree with Bruce and ringtail, but I would like to add one other item. Win or loose if you go to have a good time and meet good people and have fun then you are a winner also, trophy or not.

The big differance between the big time winners and average dogs is HEART its the same with sports stars they got that little bit extra.

I've got a couple nice dog's I hunt . If I hunted them harder I could probably win here and there . Last night's hunt I took one of my female's that just hasn't had the woods time and it showed in the Scottsmoor hunt . When she's hunted up she dies real well and my sin almost won the last RQE of the year in Florida with her . I try to pit at least 3 night's a week in the woods minimum . But fuel and entry fees get to me pretty quick raising a family . Hoping for this to change a bit especially over the next few months . One thing I know for sure is if I don't go I'll never win .

The heart of the handler plays a big roll... the consistent winners in any registry are normally the ones that lay out there with the dog they hunt & stay with them all hours of the night keeping them tuned up... JMO
