I received this from Guy Ormiston

Reference recent claim in UKC Bluetick Forum that BBOA was established in 1946._ I guess it is a common misconception._ We must look to the 1965 BBOA Yearbook for clarification. The 1965 BBOA President was James F. McKinney of Houston, MO, a prominent and longtrime Bluetick sportsman. _Some of his fellow officers were Burnis Oliver and James Orchard.

_

Nine or ten pages into the BBOA book (the pages were not numbered), across from a photo of Welshs Blue Warrior,_ is a statement by Mr. McKinney._ He states "In 1960……the Bluetick Breeders of America was organized."_ A more thorough explanation is available in my article in the 2015 BBCHA Blue Book, "A locking o' the Horns" (pg. 16).

_

BBCHA was formed in 1954 at a meeting in West Memphis, AR._ Thanks.

history

In August of 1959 then Dr E.G. Fuhrman had a meeting with a group of prominent Bluetick breeders in Sikeston, MO.

It was here the Bluetick Breeders Of America was formed and became the 6th UKC chartered organization.

First President was Bud Massey of West Plains, MO Vice President was Thurman Houston of Leeton, mo and Mike Mudd of Hawk Point, MO was elected Secretary and O.O. Grant the Treasurer.

It was agreed by UKC & BBOA that the organization would represent and participation on a National level rather than a local regional presence.

BBOA was set up into Zones and had a National following and had officers within each Zone to represent them in a geographical/zone setting giving participation at local and National levels.

FYI the original Bluetick organization was known as The Bluetick Breeders Association which as organized in 1946 with the writing of the Bluetick standards and also the support of UKC and President Dr. E.G. Fuhrman and then the 1st President of said organization was O.O. Grant (history) who was also the fist Treasurer of BBOA.

It went by the wayside mostly because major event for coon hunts were not popular during this time but was the foundation on which BBOA was developed and designed after.

I really appreciate BBOA's vision of being involved on a nationwide basis, and not just one side of the Mississippi River. History is important, and each organization has certainly made a huge contribution to the breed, and those who own them. I believe the future is even more important than the history.

History & the Breed

Thanks Craig, and as we discussed it is my feeling that what possibly holds the Bluetick back is not having one organization, as organizations don't make world hunt winners, organizations don't produce litters that succeed in making the cut and making coon hounds nor does an organization make the breed stronger, it is just a tool to provide like minded people who share a passion for the breed they love and at times a place for them to gather and visit, compete and show the breed they love.

What will make a world champion (besides some luck) and a productive litter and make the breed as a whole stronger IS THE PEOPLE.

The Walkers folks have 3 organizations and they continue to win major events. Yes there a lot more of them so the odds are in their favor but what has made a huge impact in the Walker breed is the PEOPLE who didn't have blinders on and only wanted THEIR bloodlines or THEIR program but they went to the best producing male and with a top female bred to produce coonhounds.

I know many who may not like a specif person, bloodline, or dog even but rather then put that aside and breed the best to the best they keep to their own little bubble and THAT is what keeps the Bluetick from surging as a breed....JMO

I firmly believe that many a top stud dogs who did produce went by the wayside because of who owned the dog or the particular bloodline it had behind him.

When we get to that point when 4,5,6 out of 8 pups in a litter make coon getters consistently then we will have improved the breed and though there are many ways to measure a coonhound, the hunts are where the public sees that dog.

We must get over the kennel, bloodline blindness to become successful,

The organizations are just a tool in which the love of a breed can be promoted, enjoyed and most of all promote that breed on a National level

Just My Humble Opinion

"You must learn from History or you are doomed to repeat it"

I appreciate your input, and insight. I strongly feel that any people, organization, church, or family....can get more accomplished, more efficiently, and more effectively, by working together. If there are going to be two associations, I hope they are both strong!!!
