Would like to hear what you guys use for tips on what you do to get one ready for a big hunt or just competitions hunts in general. How long before do you hunt them, do you do anything special? Just like to hear some different things out there.

I would hunt him six nights a week by himself. After a month or two of 6 nights a week by himself, he won't (or shouldn't) care what another dog is doing and will go do his own thing. If the others go with him fine if not fine, he won't care. The 1st month definitely hunt him alone the 2nd month you can cut others loose with him occasionally.

I'm no expert by no means and haven't been on a comp hunt for quiet some time. But once I have one that trees his own coon, I hunt 'em alone 90% of the time.

There are plenty of knowledgeable comp hunters on here that can probably give you better info on preparing for the comps than I can.

I put mine in a crowd as much as possible. The worse the dogs the better. I like to give them two or three nights off before I leave, and get there early to let them adjust to being on the road.

I don't care how much you hunt a dog by itself..if it is a packer and will get influenced by other dogs it's not going to fix it regardless of how much alone hunting it gets.. you need to hunt one alone to make them a Coon dog yes absolutely... But to make one a Competition dog that can compete at a high level you need to put them with others to see how they react to a bunch of other crazy dogs out there.. if they pay them no attention and stay on there game and do it like they do it alone.. then you have something.. a natural... But if they get influenced by them other dogs and they can take correction without getting there feelings hurt and hiding from you then you can train him to be a good competition dog... But if they get there feelings hurt and sull up on you your just waisting your time.. Again a packer backer is going to be just that in spite of all the hunting alone they get.. it's in there nature they can't help it.. some of them can be trained and some of them are born to stay to themselves and do there own thing.. making a dog a loaner by hunting it by themselves won't work unless they were born that way....

Give me one that will get one alone and get a peice of yours on only the trees that have coons in them I will beat you more times than not.

Tar if your dog trees a Coon.. mine better not come over there and help your dog keep that Coon in the tree.. if I have to lose with mine sitting over on that ridge alone blowing the top out with the eyeballs..I will... If I have to have my dog run to your dog to win... I won't feed it..jmo

I learned many moons ago not to try to "fix" a problem too close to hunt nite.
I think "getting one ready" varies from dog to dog.

I'm with you Tar, I don't want mine to be so independent that it wont finish what it started. I prefer one that's Indifferent versus Independent.

I agree with alot of what people have said I don't really hunt mine a bunch more then normal but I keep her hunted up r to 5 nights a week year round anyways. Bout the only thing I will try to do is maybe give them a coon or two a week so before hand just to keep them straight and a reward. Mine is usually ny herself but don't care if a dog comes in so I'm lucky in that aspect.
