Southwestern Wisconsin Coonhunters Club Final 3 Hunt-Of 2017
The final three started off with the old blue dog, Houston, getting first strike. He was then followed by Em and then Ruby. They ran down the valley a few hundred yards, and Ruby let out her locate that sounds like a freight train horn, and Terry treed her. Austin couldn’t say “tree Houston!” fast enough. I’m pretty sure he was just treeing off Ruby’s locate because Houston’s voice can barely be heard over the two Walker dogs. I finally called EM treed with about 4:30 gone on the tree, just waiting for the last minute. Also, I would hate to forget about the mouse we saw in the field, if you have met Terry you would understand how funny it would be watching him jumping around out in the middle of a field pretending that he is agile while he tried to step on the mouse. Anyhow, it didn’t take long for us to look at the tree to figure out that it was empty. Austin was too worried about the other mouse he got to jump from a hallow tree anyways. So, they all took minus. We then let them go, and the stubborn shits that they are went right back to the empty tree. So, we “gently” pulled them off the tree and walked a little further down the valley. They ran around struck in the order of Ruby, Em, and then Houston. And they treed in the order of Ruby, Houston, and then Em. On the way to the tree we may have seen an opossum out waddling in the field, let’s just say, we were a little bit faster then he was. Anyhow it was a huge hollow basswood, still no coon. We walked back over to the valley we stated on and set them up the other side, we had to split the strike because they were going crazy when we let them go. It only took 30 seconds and they got treed. Em was first, then Houston, and Terry made us stand there for a few minutes until he realized they weren’t going to leave that tree. We got up to the pine tree and luckily the top half of the tree was needleless, so it was easy to see the little coon up there. We let them go once more with somewhere around 30 minutes left in the 90-minute hunt. Ruby got struck in first followed by Em and then Houston. Em took off to the right away from the others. She got out of hearing and then I lost reception. Ruby treed, then Houston. As we were walking I walked to the side and could hear EM, treed. Her voice sounded muffled and she was only 200 yards away and I could barely hear her. Ruby and Houston ended up circling their tree, and Em was inside a small culvert fighting a coon. That was the end of the hunt. Well the end of the final three hunt, but we still went out and got a couple more coon treed that night.
