DNA Analysis ?

I just got my DNA analysis paper back today. And I was wandering what all of the numbers and letters mean? I was wandering if certain numbers and letters mean that they got a certain characteristics from there sire or dam. Or certain characteristics that they will pass on. Thx in advance

My old skuana r\iver bark stud dog has 6 sets of double letters in his dna analysis don’t know if it matters or not but he throws more of his likeness in his pups than the female in my opinion all the ones I trained were more like him than the female every time.

Hobo will disagree and I’m ok with that. 4 or more matching letters will give you a dominant trait and it will be in Every Pup, problem is you don’t know what that trait is until you breed at least 3 females.

I don't disagree with that statement Tim.... The problem is we don't know what those 4 genes contribute, So you don't know if you want to breed for those genes or not.

You guys can breed your dogs based on the DNA analysis if you want to.... I'll just keep breeding them the way I have the last few years.

Never said I breed based on any DNA, all I’m saying is matching letters will give you a dominant trait, it may be good it may be bad it may be something you can work with it may be something you can balance out, it could mean there tails sit high or to the right or to the left, could mean they have big heads, could mean they can lick the bottom of a coke bottle, could mean they have or don’t have a locate, could mean they will be chop mouth or bawl mouth on track, could mean they are cat footed and look great on plywood but won’t stay on the hardwood.

Tim I’m a firm believer the female has just as much or more to do with it in most cases but I think there can be exceptions in some cases my old dog has dew claws out of over 200 pups probably 175 had dew claws no matter the breeding of the females and they all have his color most have his mouth and his actions they all can’t tree coon as well as him in my opinion but most are really nice if given the chance.i always make sure the female has the qualities I like if I make a cross for my self I don’t breed them just because they are pretty. I know you don’t either.

The letters on the DNA certificate are called markers. Two dogs have to have a certain # of matching markers in order to be certified as offspring from two parents. The markers are genes picked at random from a certain point on a DNA chain. No one knows what if any traits these genes represent. So as someone suggested, you're dog might have dominant eye color, dominant over agressiveness, dominant long legs, dominant color. I wouldn't put too much stock in double letters on a certificate.
But a study could be done to find out which genes/markers represented what traits. Then dogs could be "scientifically" bred and you would know what you were getting in a pup. It has been done in milk cows. Genes might even be altered to make our dogs better. This has been done in plants. But such a study would cost several billion dollars and take 50 yrs to complete.

Since we are on the topic of breeding and genes, why is it that when you clone an animal and get another one with the exact same genes they don't act the same? So if a sire or dam produced an offspring that had their exact genes they still would not be the same coon dog. Apparantly there is a lot more to it than just genes or DNA. It is no wonder that breeding good coonhounds is so hard and you never know what you are going to end up with.

I like a coon dog with 2 or 3 matching letters that suits me in every way, a dog with 4,5 or 6 matching letters will produce pups that only a handful of people will enjoy, the rest of the dog world will destroy your stud cause every pup he produced will have to much tree, to much track, weak mouth, chop mouth, walks in there poo or never starts anything but will not leave (we all know what that means), big heads or small heads, cat footed or flat footed, plywood Qualaty or hardwood Qualaty.

The reason for this is simple. Kinda.....

Dogs who were identical (cloned) would and could be just that “identical” but every hound has a certain level of human influence causeing them to be different. Human influences weather good or bad are still influences that will change a Hound. There is a certain level of variables that no man could see coming or change.

We will take lipper for instance, clone him and you have a 2018 model. Looks the same, has the same genes but from day 1 if he is not handled the same way, taught the same way, treated the same way, fed the same way, given the exact same opportunities the clone will not be the same dog.

Human influences and uncontrollable variables with always make it impossible for 2 dogs weather cloned or not to be the same. It will never happen to have 2 exact replicas of the same anything.

Humans have the absolute most to do with how a dog turns out cloned or not.

So if you have a real nice hound replicating them through breeding is mite near impossible.

That’s rite, you would also need to Breed the same females and get the pups in the same hands to complete your Lipper clone.

Whoa! Hold on a minute!

IF you clone a Lipper, that clone would have the same DNA and everything as the original Lipper RIGHT?

Then how in the world would you NOT get what Lipper reproduced the first time around? Feeding, handling and everything else has NOTHING to do with how a dog reproduces....

Granted you may not have the same dog in the woods as the original Lipper BUT IF the DNA is 100% the same the clone would reproduce just as the original.

That’s rite but you still have to breed the same females if you really want to know if Clone Lipper reproduced the same as Houses Lipper.

That is tru but only way to get 100% Lipper is to clone Lipper not add 1% Rattler, only way to reproduce the same is breed the same females, But if you breed today’s females Clone Lipper would be greater than Houses Lipper LOL.

No he was mentioned before I mentioned him.....

For the record..... I'd rather clone a grandson to Lipper than Lipper. That way you got him back far enough to weed out the bad and still get what good there was.
