Chickahominy Max

I was just wondering if anyone out there had any pictures of Chickahominy Max and his pedigree. I know he is a dog of the past "70's" I think. I have heard he was a good one.

Chickihominy Max

Thanks, I like to see what this hound looked like. Ive heard a lot about him over the years. I think he was owned by Sid Dowd if I'm getting the name right.

MAX

MAX was sired by CH GR NITE CH Hunters Timber Chopper, and his mother was NITE CH Millers Valley Liz, he was born in May of 1969.

MAX was a full brother, different litter tho, to Campbell's Timber Chip, who was born in Oct. 1971 --
the Chip dog was the sire to Famous Amos

Hope this helps--I got this info from the June 2010 issue of Coonhound Bloodlines,
Maybe Danny can post more info & a picture or two.

Max—-

I remember talking to Mr. Philip Gray at ARCA Days down in AR one year going over different Pedigrees and Max came up. He said when that litter was born Max looked like a freak with his long ears. When he told Mr Hunter about “the freak”, Mr Hunter didn’t want Philip to let anyone have the pup because of his looks. BUT when Mr Owens seen him he took him mainly because he wasn’t suppose too AND to have some fun with Mr Hunter—he named him “MAX”.

Mr Jack Brown told me take old Max would lay around Mr Owens house all day, but when the sun went down and he see the gun, he was all coonhound.

Owens Chickhominy Max

Just an old magazine clipping. Sid Dowd of Arkansas bought Max from Ottis Owens of Virginia when he was about 5-6 years old.

Chickihominy Max

Thanks Guys for the info, story, and picture. I told a good friend of mine Brent Posey that I can spend hours whole evenings going through old Magazines looking at the old pictures of the Redbones of the past. I wonder what they were like compared with our Redbones of today. It sure would have been something if they could have froze semen back then.

Paul Swetman and his Son Paul Jr became good friends with Sid Dowd in his later years and bought the last living Son out of Chickahominy Max. He was a big super long eared dog that was about 9 or 10 years old when they got him. Sid then let the Swetman's use his old kennel name. "Rose-Max".

Is there a particular line?

Is there a particular line that goes back to Max? Where Max is on both top and bottom sides of the pedigree several times?

Max

The only line that I knew of Darrin was the one that Ron mentioned of Paul Swetnam Jr. But there might be others. I seen Paul and Paul Jr. At the hunts a lot in the early 90's.

Darrin I don't know if Paul Jr. Is still hunting or not. I haven't seen him for several years. If I'm not mistaken he won either American or National Redbone days with one of these hounds. I'm thinking if I remember correctly it was Hugo or Scar. By the way I dropped Brandy back off to Tim and Sam. They are very nice people. I can't wait to get one of those pups.

Mr. Don Hall keeps some dogs that trace back to Schwetnams Scar and therefore Max I believe. One of these was at or near the top of $hkc standings for Redbones in 2017 (Brummy). That particular litter was sired by Rocky. I had a littermate that was a decent dog also (2 firsts and a little money won).

I hunted with Hoss several times. Paul and little Paul got into the Redbones in the late 70's or early 80's. Paul Sr was a Bluetick man until he started working construction in Okla and got hooked up with Richard Chatman. He Bought a older Red Female home and a short time later he brought Hoss home. Paul Jr put all the wins on Hoss they just never changed his name. Paul Sr was one of the most enjoyable guys to talk and hunt with that I've ever met. Great people.

I don't know the full pedigree but Don Hall bred a female of his named Reba to Tree Jammin Trump and got a pretty nice female named Gr Nt Trumps Tree Jammin Dixie. Dixie was a 2 time UKC World Champion Redbone several years back. Don and Paul were very active in $KC hunts many years back. Mr Joe Lewis also had a very nice Red female that did quite a bit of winning in both KC's back in those days. Her name was Babe and she was out of Paul's dogs.

Don Halls Reba

Ill have to ask Angie if this is the same Reba female that me and Greg Maynards father Larry went down in Kentucky and tried out and Larry ended up buying and trading to Donnie for a Beef. I bet it is. My gosh that has been a few years back. I bet that is the same Reba female That Donnie got of Larry Maynard that we tried out just below Maysville. She was a good one. Greg had heard about her and me and Larry went and tried her out. She was a nice female.

If I'm not mistaking the Reba female that Don Hall had was a female that I raised here until she was around two years old. She was out of a Dan dog I had that was out of my old Nite Ch Smith's Red Oak Dexter dog and a Fire female out of some of Jack McDonald's breeding. Reba Mother was also a female I raised here out of Gr Nite Ch Brunswick Little Man and Frog Hollow Kate. Rick I think that is the same Reba female that was down in your area for a while.

I got a puppy out of Su and Northern Hoss from Paul at US Days in 1988 that my daughter was with and she named him Mikie. He was a bawl mouth track and tree hound, very fast track hound with a very good nose. Ran a track with his head up and would drift a track to catch. Like some of Pauls hounds, once you shot the coon out and he knew it was dead he would just lay down and wait for you to skin it, very laid back hound. Wish I could have gotten pups out of Mikie and Cheta II. But with my Allie pup I have now carrying Northern Tanner and my Zach carrying Northern Hoss, who knows??

McDonald Breeding

Is there any of that around anymore? If you look at some of the numbers that stuff was reproducing at 10%+ back in the day before we had a list to motivate breeders with. Id bet its gone but was wondering and saw Mr Swann mentioned it
