I use (scrap)rough sawn inch lumber. Mostly native hardwood species.
I fasten them to the tree with no 9 fence brace wire. I double wrap the wire near the top and bottom of the box, then twist it up tight with a screw driver.
I face the boxes as Southernly as possible, because the prevailing wind is out of the Northwest.
Some more tips:
I hang my boxes in lesser quality trees,(pines, cedars, hedge, dead snags, etc.) No sense in ruining a good hardwood with wire, lag screws, etc.
I hang them up near a food and water source.
To get coons living in them,I'll usually put some marshmellows in the box and then put peanut butter, used cooking oil, fish oil, etc. on the trunk. Once a coon finds it,they usually set up shop shortly there after.
If squirrels move into the box first, don't be discouraged, once a coon finds the box they will eject the squirrels in a timely manner.
Hope this helps.
