UKC needs to change

Here we go again another UKC and no hunt director. Who wants to sit in a club house and do nothing all night. As our sport is starting to blow away in the wind so is our willingness to find people to volunteer. Its time to change the rule and let hunt directors hunt in the hunts. Because what is the point of having a person sitting in the club house doing nothing and if a question comes in they can't do a thing about it anyway until they find a panel.

HD'S

Be glad that UKC went "back" to the HD format so you don't need a MOH to host an event. I do believe it would be nice if the HD could participate, but at least those of us who are MOH's get a chance to hunt once in a while now.

Well maybe

When the club gets together and they schedule the hunts they can schedule the rest of the formalities that go along with it? That way everything is done in advance. Hunt director, or MOH, guides, food, trophies, bench show, bench judge, permits? That way people know in advance.

Just Maybe

I have been a Master of hounds since the mid to late 80s, seems everyone wants some one else to do the paper work and have responsibiities and they get to hunt. Maybe just maybe it's time for hunters to step up to the plate. Its getting so no one wants to support the clubs, work or hunt responsibilities. JMO before you know it there will not be any clubs to hunt from.

Our club is leaning toward other hunts because of this problem.

I personally do not care for a hunt director. Most can't even get a panel up correctly, or when you have a problem, you have to wait on them to get out the kitchen before they work on a panel set up. Even with that, getting a hunt director should be no problem at all. Rotate that duty to some of the ,hunters in the club. Better yet, get you a MOH, and things are solved. UKC is not your problem. Selfish hunters within the club are. While I think the sitting at a clubhouse all night as a hunt director is worthless, there is reasons for them to be there. If they are out hunting, who is to get the panel up for the cast that only hunted ten minutes and had to return for a question? Sure, if you have the right thing done ahead of time, that panel could already be at the club house, but then in most cases its the cook staff that hasn't hunted in how many years? No there isn't many good reasons to use a hunt director if you are having trouble getting one. Plain and simple, the club just doesn't have enough dedicated members to step up and serve one night. MOH answers your problem. Then you know who is going to be there answering all the questions and close the door after most all are gone. We at my club have used a hunt director in the past, but guess who has to be that lucky guy most every time? Only good thing that comes out of the hunt director format is he/she can have a dog in the hunt, and that's the only reason it has ever been used at our club. Good luck on your problem, and I support you on the director hunting, that is until they come back to reality and eliminate that part from the rule book altogether. It just doesn't work out real well. Yes it tends to be ok for other kc's, but then I have seen rules change from panel to panel, on the same question, on the same night. to each his/her own, but it just isn't for me.

Rock I don't like the hunt dirrector format either but a lot of hunts are not drawing enough dogs to pay a moh. I am like you if we have enough guides at our club I am the one in the chair all night but if I have to guide I make Mrs tar the hunt director they behave then because she is the cook too and you don't mess with the cook if you want to eat lol. As far as questions I hear all these war story's we haven't even had a question at any hunts I have moh around here in years just don't happen I don't know why lol.

Coongrease, I agree, however not every one is honest. I have not had any aurguments lately either, or they just need an interpitation. We also have guys/gals just starting out and they get taken advantage of. Yes they should know the rules but its a learning curve. Would we want to see other sports with no judges, unfortunattely it is human nature to try and bend rules to win. JMO

Pay? We are supposed to get paid??????? Just me, but I have never asked for money. I have asked for a cup or two of coffee to help with the drive home.

Fact of matter is society is changing. It is no longer in vogue to contribute to the greater good. It is all about "me" today.

I've been a moh since the 80s and I only once got paid , it was at a big hunt 100 dogs and there moh did not show up $25 entry and I was there to hunt , so They said we will pay you 100 miles from home and a 4 am deadline and when I charged them $100 you would have thought I robbed them lol

Robert Johnson I haven't seen a question brought to the table in 10 years at a every weekend local hunt. The panel thing is only a back up deal. A hunt director is another entry being taken always from a hunt. The non hunting director is not working. You better check out your MOH list and look up Iowa. More then half or dead and the other 1/3 quit hunting 20 years ago. Just a reminder to UKC it's time again to listen to your customers that are paying your bills.

Ryan, I partially agree with you. In a perfect world it should work, yes I haven't had any major issues since I started back up 3 years ago. However that is not the reason hunt numbers are down, least wise not here in Michigan. In the 80s coon prices were up and a lot of people hunted and they came and hunted in the hunts as a side to fur hunting, these individuals were not die hard coon hunters and when price fell out they left and would not feed a dog. Also our youth hunters are down. Like Larry said its about "me" not about the sport. We need the MOH to keep it above board. UKC was the founders of the competition hunts and they have made changes to keep up with the times and they still put on some of the Largest hunts in the country. UKC breed hunts draw big growds and then u have Autumn Oaks, Winter Classic, and Grand American just to name a few. People need to step up get their Master Of Hounds license or be a Hunt Director. If club members would take turns then possibly they would only miss one time entering. That is what it takes to have a succesfull club. Our club here does that for the most part, thou I vollunteer a lot to help out. That and I'm old and kitchen is open and I like to eat and tell old hunt stories

The hunt director hunting works 6 nights a week all over the country and I have never seen a problem. No reason it cant work for UKC. Its not that complicated.

I think it could work for a local small hunt. For the larger ones I have been to, in other kcs, while it works out when questions come back, and yes they do come back, to say otherwise, you are fooling yourself, it is way less than perfect. Personally, I could care less if they hunt or not. The thought that a club is going to stop hunting UKC over the hunt director being able to hunt or not, is a club that is on the verge of going bankrupt. In this area, a club can't pay the bills if it stand alone as another kc club. None of the other kc clubs have club houses and some even meet in the parking lots of conveinence stores to draw cast. Fact is the money just doesn't add up to the survival modes here. Drop UKC and its over around here, that is if you want a place to hold real events etc...

Rock also with the hd format a lot of clubs around here that do it don't have a bench show at our club we do and it pays for the building rent and food I judge it for free also we also trade out if some of the guys need to show under a different judge I go moh for their club for free they judge my bench show for free as for doing it I still get to hunt in as many hunts as I want to ( don't take as much as it used to now lol ) you can't pay club expenses with revenue off of $$$ hunts just won't work between paying the kc's fees and paying the hunters there is not much left.

I know it Joey but we need help new programs , new rules , young people that want to work , more feild reps , and a kc that wants to do more than an 8 to 5 job five days a week selling dog papers if I am wrong prove me wrong I am to old and cranky to be scared that's the way it looks from the outside looking in.
