Running loose on farm

I understand the logic behind letting them run loose, but do you think it could be more detrimental than good in the long run. I have a redbone now who is only 6 months and 1 week old running and treeing by himself. Never been out with another hound, no drag, no turning one loose, no hang ups. I took him walking and correcting behavior issues as a pup, well we are still learning, but what if I let him just run loose now at 6 months I would have other issues I feel to overcome. Then I feel it would set him back. What do you all think, I don’t want to have to retrain when all I need to do is hunt him. Give me your thoughts.

I know it’s like a freak of nature a redbone actually treeing his own Coon at 6 months old but I did it differently this time.

Mike did both my last pups one did great other one not so great, the one that didn't it was more he doesn't want to be caught (my fault) due to everytime i caught him would put him in pen. He wised up. The first one was running loose with my beagle pup and she started running rabbits at 3 months old, then switched to coon very easy. Made for a very independant dog. I would still do it again.

The one I have that doesn't like being caught is still independant and running, so his faults are due to me not working with him as much as first one.

let him run

Ive always believed in letting a pup run loose if you have a safe place to do it.I let them run until they start getting in trouble.If he is already treeing coon,or cats or possem or whatever,as long a he is running tree game I think its time to pin him up and put him in the timber.

I HAVE STARTED A BUNCH OF THEM OVER YEARS LETTING THEM RUN LOOSE,BUT WHEN THEY START GETTING TREED,I PUT THEM UP,BECAUSE THEY WILL GET TREED WHEN YOU ARE NOT AROUND AND GET TO LEAVING THE TREE WHEN THEY GET TIRED,

The key is the running "loose". It all depends on how "loose" you let them run. Running with minimal supervision is a lot better. Turning them out and not seeing them but once a week is not very good. They get too wild.

My main reason for letting them run loose is they mature faster and do not develop that wired up crazy thing they get when they stay in the pen all the time. I don't have a farm but I have a 1 acre back yard. My buddy has a pen at his house. At the same age mine are a lot further along than his. In your case you are hunting him I wouldn't let him run loose now.

He's a redbone. How far do you live from the nearest KFC?

several years ago i had a red female that was out of bomber and a grandnight female out of rusty red . i let her run loose as a pup . at 8 months old she was getting treed at night and i knocked a couple out to her then put her in the kennel and continued her training . she made a nice one . i would put him up and just start hunting him .years ago you could let a hound run loose an no one would bother it . now days it is not worth the risk to leave one running unsupervised when they start ranging out farther from home. you have already seen the pup has some natural ability while running loose. time to move on in his training .
