Coon pens/puppy pens

Do Coon pens really help a young dog get started or does it even effect the dogs ability at all? I hunt thin coons and was really considering sending my pup to a Coon pen to help her get started. What’s your thoughts? Good or bad idea? Thanks

My limited experience with pens is that they definately benefit a pup but running loose on a farm is just as good. The problem is most of us are not farmers anymore and running loose isn't practical for us. A good coon pen is a great thing for a pup.
The downside is often they are left to bark nonstop and that is a bad thing for a young pups voice. But I have found that letting a pup run loose all the time, even without exposure to coons, will make them bolder and more outgoing. And they will get to treeing something. What they tree isn't important. It also makes the duds show up much sooner, saving wasted time and dog food.

You need to find a farm to let that dog run loose on, should have a buddy or two with him, they will be bolder and will start treeing sooner, If not, get them in a coon pen as soon a possible. Third get a rolling cage and pick up one of Uncle John's Books on training, start working him at the tree asap, (The sooner the better) Pull that rolling cage up in a big tree, bigger the better, and if he is not interested let it down to him till he gets interested. If this does not work call John Wick and see if he can help.(He takes calls all the time and helps out on training problems.) If all this does not seen to help him call the breeder and demand your money back..

Don't do very much of the cage coon up a tree it gets pups jumping at the tree. You are better off to catch coons to turn loose than showing a bunch of cage coons.
Everything we start does run loose here and it is hands down the best way to start a pup. A coon pen is better than nothing and is a safe environment but just got tracks in an enclosed area for too long is not a good idea either. I would use a coon pen for short periods of time. Most pups today the tree part is not an issue it's the tracking that they need. Letting pups run loose is like puppy kindergarten. They learn to cross fences and water, go hunting, get through and navigate the woods, run actual tracks no matter what it is they run and tree. Running loose gets all the ground work out of the way so that when a pup is old enough to hunt it has an idea of what hunting is and isn't just standing at your feet.
If you have no place to do this than you need to spend a lot of time with the pup out of the pen. Walks along creeks and woods even during the day time just letting them run and explore and some coon turned loose occasionally can be a good start.
