RIP Layton's Classy Cali
The Redbone breed lost a good one this week as we laid Layton's Classy Cali to rest. Cali was a great coondog and paved the way into the history books and the hearts of many of all breeds, winning against the best dogs in the country. It's only fitting that I give honor to her hard work and accomplishments in her 5 years of competition hunting.
Cali started her competition career with a bang with Brian Layton by placing 7th at the UKC World Championship and High Scoring Redbone as a 2 year old. She qualified and finished High Scoring Redbone Female 4 years in a row at the UKC World Hunt.
In PKC, she won her first PKC Pro Hunt with Brian Layton in 2014 and was off to the races leading the 2015 PKC Pro Race for most of the year. She placed 3rd in the PKC Pro Hunt in Onsted, MI that same year while she was 5 weeks pregnant. She finished the year in 3rd place overall and the highest of any Redbone in history.
In 2016 she and Tony Dominguez won her second PKC Pro Hunt in MS and made it into the PKC Pro Hunt Semi Finals 4 times. She was one of 4 Redbones chosen to represent the breed in the first PKC All Breed Challenge Hunt. She was the only Redbone to make it through a grueling first round and then later a head to head match against one of the best dogs in the country, to make it to the finals where she won Reserve Champion against the best dogs in the world.
Cali and Tony Dominguez ran for a truck ticket in August of 2016 and after thousands of miles of traveling she achieved the goal and won the 2016 Redbone Breed Race and Texas State Race with over $2,400 won in open events for the year. She went on to qualify for the UKC World Championship for the 5th time in 5 years with a 1st place win at her RQE.
Cali was only the second Redbone to ever make PKC Gold Ch. and the first Redbone female, and is the highest PKC money winner ever for a Redbone with over $19,000 won. She was $900 short of Platinum Ch. She is the first Redbone to ever win two PKC Pro Hunts, a feat that very few dogs of any breed have ever achieved.
Not only was she was she a winner, she was also a champion of many hearts and she made an impact on every person who ever got to know her. She made the Redbone breed believe again that this breed can compete and win against the best out there. She is one of the most intelligent hounds I've ever known and worked her way into many homes and couches along the way. She started out in the dog box many times, only to find her way into the front seat of most pickup trucks including mine. i know that she will always be a part of Brian Layton's, Tony Dominguez, and my heart. Rest in Peace girl. You laid it all out there and left nothing behind. You owe us nothing and we are forever grateful for everything you have given us.
