Lines and traits

I've been a walker man all my life but have found that breed has took a turn for the worse.

I'm wanting to know the blood lines of these red dogs and what they are known for and what crosses good on what. Like in the Walker world Rat bred dogs are tree power, lipper, yadkin River are track dogs with big mouths, Harry dogs have heart, Finley River dogs are lay up dogs. Want to know what lines throw what traits.. Thanks in advance.

P.S sorry if it's a strange question but I got to start from the ground up

Your gonna find out that everyone has what your looking for in there lines. A good redbone is hard to find unless your satisfied with mediocre. there are a couple of lines that produce heart, drive and independence. there's plenty out there that compete at the local level but not many that can compete at the upper levels (honestly anyways).

Good response Jack!

A.C.
This scoundrel would be a good place to start! He knows a dog, knows the competition, and is realistic about what he & others are packing because he has represented the breed extremely well!
Good job Jack! Keep up the good work! Good luck in 2018

Good response Jack. Couldn’t agree more. There are a few people trying to step out of the box and breed to get the type of Redbones you described above. There are not many out there with some of these traits many of us and you desire but we are getting there . I believe crossing some of these lines and dogs will get some of these traits that a few of us desire.

Thanks for the words. Just wanted to know where to start. Are all the dogs for the most part balanced? Walkers-some lines throw ground pounders and some are tree happy but a mixture can make good ones. Is there lines in this breed that go good together? Like Coma X Rat, Lipper X Rat,?

Line bred T-Top works to give you the nose/track and balance.. Then outcoss that with Ranger to add some tree. Or outcross it with B3 to add some hunt and independence. Or outcrossing it with CD works also. Now that has just been my experience. And it doesn't always work but it does occasionally. Of course none of that is "my lines".

This could be the best post in awhile!

Completely agree with Jack. If Guy’s will respond on her it could be very informative. I could use the info on lines I don’t know. I have primarily have Hunted a lot of different strains of Fireball. All are different. Some tree better some track better. Same trait that I have seen out of the ones I have hunted they tend to be consistently tight on track. Not all but the majority are.

Where is the King of the Cowboys? Isn't Rusty throwing a certain "type" of pups? And they seem to be winning. Leonard, I have never known you to be bashful before.

Thumbs up

When we talk about "lines" we use Firebopall, Rusty Red, T-Top etc. But they have been gone a long time. Shouldn't we start updating to maybe Pepper, B3, Rocky, Big Walnut Creek, Hick's Rusty, Coffman's, Moonlight/Outlaw and a host of others. Maybe we need to decide who/what the lines are now before we can say what traits they are throwing.

Suggestion

I'd test the water before jumping in (buying something). Hunt with it a few times before you buy it. If a puppy, hunt with the Sire and Dam at least. Just like the other breeds, there is good, better, great, bad and worse scattered all throughout. What one man considers to be a real good dog, could be average or below to another.
Balance: There are some balanced hounds scattered around. Most Reds I've hunted are kinda tight mouthed when compared to a lot of the Walkers.
Good luck

I Agree Richard

Firebal lines I have hunted Twister ,Yellow River, and Banjo. Out of these dogs I have found Twister dogs to be tight and Independent. Some of the Yellow River dogs are this way, not all of the them. I have hunted a few off Doc that were open. The Banjo stuff can be tight coming out of B3. However, the dogs off Moe are open. Moe was quick on track and quick to tree.

Want honest strike dogs too. I'm planning on hunting a lot of different dogs and getting some of the different lines in the kennel. I want to better the breed, and do my part to try to make an impact. Not crazy about the type of hound it takes to win $kc just because an honest dog usually doesn't have the upper hand. Regardless, i appreciate all the help and will use it to try and figure it out as I go.

You will almost always get accuracy but I wish you the best of luck with the other two traits. Guys will tell you they have it but they dont. Walker drive and track speed are not very common in redbones no matter what you read on here.

Mr Simpson

I would enjoy that very much. For the record I said walker drive and track speed are not very common in redbones. I know first hand there are guys that have it.

I also know there are guys that think they have it and dont know the difference. There are also guys that dont have it but want someone new to the breed to buy a pup from them, so they say they do.

I honestly just hope Arkansas Cooner finds what he is after. If he does Id sure want some of the same.

Heart, drive.

Deuce is 10 years old, he has slowed down some what. Most of his pups as well as his grandpups are showing those same trates. I ain't got anything for sell, just trying to show folks what's out there. I'll be glad to show um to anyone.

Fellows I am not a competition hunter. I don't know anything about redbone lines. I bought my male dog 2.5 years ago and would like to reproduce this type of redbone. He leaves slow and steady, hunts with purpose, will go as far as he has to and is pretty accurate. He will tree a possum on occasion. Hard core tree dog. I had a lipper dog before this so I know tree dogs. Yellow river and ranger breeding.
