I had a situation happen to me Saturday night while hunting a pup that is 8 1/2 months old and was just curious how other handlers would have handled it.

This pup has only been hunted about 10 times but has treed 3-4 coons by itself. She ran and treed a coon and did a nice job. After finding the coon I lead her a short ways and send her on. She quickly goes back to the same tree and starts treeing again. I go back, put her on the lead strap and lead her 150 yards or more away and send her the opposite direction. In a couple more minutes...she enough she is back to the same tree, hitting it harder than ever.

What do YOU do now...knowing this is a pup that has just started treeing her own coon and has only been hunted a few times?

Few options. Either move her completely out of the area so she can't go back. That way your not teaching her to go back. Or you have to rough her up a little. That choice depends on the dogs personality. I would probably just move to a completely different spot. You can teach her to cast from the tree at a later date.

My self I would went and got her again. Led her 10 feet from tree and cut her loose, and make her leave. That way I can catch her and make her leave so I dont have to walk so far. I hate to discipline at a tree but she would know not to get back on the tree. Then if she went off and treed another you have a win/win situation. She treed another and now you won't have to lead away from tree, just cut her there. Thats what I try to do with mine. When I had hounds.

Since she's only been hunted a few times. I would of lead her off the tree a little further and sent her on. I wouldn't of used a switch just yet I will wait until they are getting treed A little more. I have no problem correcting one at a tree like some do. Some will think you will ruin one especially a 6-7-8 month old pup by disciplining them at the tree. If that wll ruin it you don't want it anyway. I hate a dog that can't take a scolding no matter the age.

Before I head south!! what I would have done !! 8 1/2 mts old!! that coon would have been on ground!! but when they do go back what Carder said!! 10ft sendem on! takes a few times but they will get it !!when they are alone!!

pick up and move to another spot. i would let her get more solid before disciplining her around the tree. if shes doing so good so soon i wouldn't want to deter her from treeing... maybe move spots so she doesn't get in to the habit of going back and then work on walking her off and recasting later.

On a pup going back, if you were alone load up and move spots. If you had someone with you, have them stay at tree with a switch. Walk the pup 50 or so yards. Send the pup just like you are cutting for the first time. Don't say a word to the pup. If the pup goes back have the person at the tree run her off, make sure that the other person has their light off also. You don't need to go back to the tree. If she can't be ran off have the other person put a lead on her and y'all move to a different spot. Have you been shooting coons out to the pup, hang ups?

Leashing and moving to a new spot will create a new problem! Run her off and make her go hunting! One tree and go to the truck on a regular basis will make a dog think this drop is over. I've seen this happen a lot. You can tell real fast in a cast if a guy has a dog like this because he's wants to call time out and move spots after the first tree.

This pup is eight and a half months old, and treeing coons, lets keep the experience fun until she gets more experience and confidence. Lead her off the tree and move to a new spot, there is plenty of time to deal with the other situation as she matures.

Thanks for the replies guys. Lead her to the truck is what I did and will do for a while...then when she has more confidence and experience we shall learn to go on hunting and leave it alone.

Patients is to most important part of the training process. At 8 1/2 months old going back to the tree would be the least of my worries. I've ran dogs off the tree at a later time in their life but young ones can sometime be effected in a negative way. Always remember, for every action there will be some kind of reaction. Take it slow and enjoy this pup. Envision where this pup will be in 6 months instead of the next drop. Good luck, sounds like you have a great prospect.

8.5 months old, hunted 10 times. I would have loaded up and moved to another spot and turn loose.

Like Bruce said, you can teach her to cast from the tree later.

I'm by no means an expert, but I would strongly consider doing the most difficult thing, which for me is getting in the truck and going home. You've had a great hunt with a young pup. Go home and you can both lay there and think about how much fun it was instead of both laying there thinking about a negative experience. There will be time for teaching and correcting later. Send her directly off that tree and don't let come back, dogs don't know negativity, and its not going to ruin her tree ability one bit. She may pout some, but she will go hunting again once she quits pouting. Training is all about putting them through the things you don't want them to do. If my pup wants to do something I don't like then I expose him or her to it and work on it until it isn't a problem any more and then move on to the next level. You have to teach them right from wrong and its alot easier to start young.
That's just crazy to pull her and go to another spot, teach her right the first time.
