Differences within a litter

I was pondering this at 5am this morning when I turned some dogs loose. Was nice and quiet and I watched my 2 walker sisters take off and it got me to thinking....

I know not all dogs are created equal within a litter. Some litters are much more uniform than others. These 2 walkers of mine couldn't be more different. One is short coupled, the other lanky. One has a ton of track and works it slow and methodically, the other lacks a lot of track but has a ton of tree. One has a pure hatred of coon, the other chooses often not to fight. One is a people person, the other could care less if she was ever petted.

I guess, in retrospect, it's the same with siblings. Not all turn out the same. Just wondering if anyone has seen such a drastic difference in litter mates?

Just curious, how do they look in comparison to each other? Do they look like each other?

Look

Nope. Don't really resemble one another all that much. Saddle backed and marked up very similar, but one tall and lanky and one short and stocky.

.

I am seeing that now in 4 pups from a litter. They are like 11 months old and i can see the mothers traits in them and the dads. Just they all have them combined a little different. Funny the thoughts i had about them when they were three weeks old are pretty much the same now. Two are mine and two are a friends. I have one that is the best looking pup but i disliked him when he was three weeks old and he hasnt done anything to change my mind. He might end up in the deer pack lol

I just raised a litter of 2 that turned a year old. Other than similar color, they were built very opposite of each other.

Bruce

I'm with Bruce on this one. Got to at least keep a good looker around for a year to see its worth. If things don't pan out, lots of families looking for a good looker!

spin

So let me spin it this way.... Is the ultimate goal in raising a litter "uniformity"? Is the success of a litter dependent upon all pups looking, hunting, and acting similar? Just some food for thought....

.

There is a big difference in PUPs and comparing PUPS and the Grown Dogs from a litter. There can be some pups that favor the mom and some favor the father. You may like some of the actions you see in one pup more than another. When they are finished out you have a totally different ballgame. Like the pups I have that I never favored, (Liked) with some woods experience they sometimes turn out to have the best ability or equal ability to the other dogs in the litter. Yes I look for uniformity in the finished product of a litter. Just them pups can show a variety of ways getting there.

We recently had threads on here about selective breeding, I stated that basically there is a lot of luck involved and if you pair up the correct sire and dam it will make someone look like they know what they are doing. We cant even get uniformity out of the same littler. Why would we think we could take two dogs that have never been matched up and know what we are going to get? Millions of variables involved, if we get 1 out of 10 that makes it big in a litter it was successful, what about the 9 that didn't?

Would line breeding create uniformity in abilities? It certainly does in appearance.

Litters

Success of a litter also lies in the eyes of the beholder. Some may judge success on titles. Others on just having an enjoyable hound to pleasure hunt with. These are just two examples.

To me a successful litter is one where the majority of owners are happy with the finished product. Be it a hound they can run in the hunts and win with, one they can tree a coon with or one they can brag up around all of their buddies.

Everyone bases success from different measuring systems.

One thing that I know for sure is IF you aren't producing pups that the buyers aren't happy with you won't be in the breeding business very long.

How close do the common ancestors need to be for you to consider it line breeding?
