i look for it (and seem to end up with the ones that have it over the others) but i think in reality it is a wives tale.

i have never set much score on the smart knot 3 whiskers turned up under the chin black mouths . i do think a pup that has black toe nails has tougher feet than one with white nails . i dont think the first pup that gets out of the box is the best pick or the runt makes the best dog .what i do know if you have any reservations about a pup pick it has a greater chance of not making coon dog.i once drove 9 hours to pick up a pup . looked at them about 30 minutes and told the breeder sorry for wasting your time .kenneled a short distance away was a 6 month old female that caught my eye .she didnt have the power packed papers like the other pups but her actions and looks suited me fine .mr john monroe let me have her for the same price as the pup i came to get . she made a dandy despite being out of 2 dogs with only pr papers that had never saw a night hunt lol . pick a pup that pleases you in every way so it can get a fair chance in the woods to prove its self .

My pup has it and he is as smart as they come but yet to see how he will do as a coondog. I think it translates to how smart a dog is but not how good of a hound. But a smart hound definitely has a better chance of making it in my opinion.

No
I pick one with no shyness, one that seems intelligent, and resembles the side of the family I like the best. I've also rarely had good luck when I chose the biggest pup.

Very good answer.I like a" bright eyed pup", one that seems to follow me around and is bold,I like to have a good feelin about a future prospect. They also have to have at least 3 hairs in the mole under their chin, black roof of their mouth, dark eyed, and out of something I think will have the bred in traits I like one to have.LOL

I think it all boils down to this size doesn't matter color doesn't matter hairs mouth color tree knot toe nails none matter if you do your homework be patient pick the 2 dogs and bloodlines that have worked and continue to work go to that litter close your eyes and pick up a pup male or female biggest or runt if they ate born with and breed to be coondogs they all stand the same chance nest advice I seen if you don't like my logic pick 2 out set them in the road the one that gets hit rush to the vet get it fixed and keep that one couse the good ones always end up having bad thing happen to them lol

Picking Pups

I usually try to select the one that would rather have my attention instead of food. I remove the food and when the litter is hungry I offer them the choice of food or my attention and make my selection from the ones that want a pat on the head. I also hide treats and watch for the pup who have the ability to find the treat the quickest. I also check for intelligence by not bringing a treat and watch which pup checks to see if there is a treat where they found one yesterday. If you just want a nice dog then intelligence is not a #1 priority, but if you want the very best then it should be #1 on your list of traits. I've also agree that most of the traits that make the very best dog are recessively controlled. One reason outstanding dogs don't reproduce is because their owners usually are unable to find one of the opposite sex that is outstanding. Other outstanding dogs are the result of making a perfect hybrid cross and that wont reproduce. I've got more fingers on one hand than I've seen outstanding dogs in my lifetime. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
