Nasty kennel manners

i have a 5 month old puppy i have out on a tie out because when shes in a pen she is just so nasty! there wont be a clean place in her pen, shell have walked through, patty caked and apparently finger painted and done jumping jacks in her poop and has it all over every available square inch of floor it seems like. ive never had a dog, especially a female that is so nasty! it ends up taking 30 min to scrape the concrete, spray it down, bleach and scrub it... i know a lot of people wont keep one that has kennel manners like this but shes top bred and has already opened on track and id hate to pass her on if shes going to turn out to be something. on the other hand im about ready to pull my hair out. i suppose i could just leave her tied out but does anyone have any suggestions on breaking this?

Take her for runs to wear her out . Pups have a lot of energy to burn and that's what it's sounds like.

She gets hunted pretty regularly. She's not overly rambunctious she just doesn't care where she goes... she'll just waltz right though it right after... I've never seen such

Kennel manners

My son has 2 pups in the kennels right now and I have never ever seen this before. Neither one of then will crap in the kennel!!! He gets them out 3 times a day and they walk over in the weeds and do their business. One pup is 3 months old and the other is not even 2 months old. I am amazed.

Well

I still didn't believe these 2 pups, so I went out this morning to give fresh water and I opened the gate and they ran out to the weeds and crapped and then started playing. Looked for it in the kennel and in box. Nothing. I am just amazed by this. So I guess I will chalk it up to putting a septic system in the kennels.

ItsOlMander, I have a suggestion for you, before you do anything drastic !!

I acquired 2 females from a breeder friend of mine late last Fall. What you described in your post is EXACTLY what I wake up to every morning.....absolute FILTH, and I can't stand it !!! I have NEVER had a dog do this before.

Then, we found out that my friend's dogs (and the 2 females that I got) have a parasitic infection called "Giardia". This causes these dogs to defecate more often, and to defecate more fecal amount than an otherwise healthy dog.

The vet has to do a separate test for Giardia, and not just a fecal check for worms. These parasites are not worms. The test was not very expensive, and it solved our problem !!

You might want to ask your vet to test your puppy for this, before you part with her. Maybe you won't have to....
Good Luck !!

Deb

I'm definitely going to look in to that test! She doesn't seem like she's stupid. Picks up on things pretty quickly, she's just nasty. But i suppose stupid id as stupid does... I worm mine regularly with zimmectrin gold and she's actually house broke so you would think she wouldn't want to be in filth but who knows. Usually female dogs are more cleanly so this has thrown me for a loop.

Mike I had a bluetick puppy i raised that was the same way, wouldn't go in her pen, and would only go poop by a fence line or tree line. She was very quick to pick up on coons too.

You said the test was not expensive and it solved the problem, but what was the treatment? Just curious.

Far as dogs not going at their pen, I got one here the same way. Going on 9 yrs old and the dog absolutely will not go until he's left loose. Far as I know I've never cleaned up a pile from him. Whether tied at a box or penned in a kennel. I suppose if you didn't let him loose he'd be forced to change his habits, but it's alright by me.

This is about all you can do...I have had three dogs like this. The modern day, "politically correct" term that breeders use is "active in the kennel"...my term is high strung, hyperactive, barking mad, kennel pacing idiot. Sometimes these dogs calm down when they get about three years old, but the chances that most normal trainer/handlers will put up with it that long are pretty slim. I mean, if you really like this dog then try to hang in there, she might make it. I do know of a few guys that believe a dog like this can make something "special" if you can direct all that excess energy in a positive way.

This is about right, what I have seen with these dogs is that they can pace for hours in the kennel and still be barking treed 5 hours after a butterfly flew past the kennel, you put them in the woods and they are just too dumb to get it. Don't take this wrong, yours might be different but I have yet to see it. Just like some people, along with all that hyperactive lunacy is generally low intelligence...not exactly a recipe for a great coon dog.
There always seems to be some parasite or disease to explain away what dogs do...I wouldn't suggest you count on beaver fever causing this anymore than I would erlichiosis causing one to run deer.

it isn't much of an issue when shes on a tie out, id just rather her be in a pen. what i don't get is she doesn't pace the entire time shes in a kennel or on a tie out. on days im home every time i peek out at them or come outside shes laying down, and gets up to greet me. that has me wondering if its the parasitic infection LitteTown mentioned.

Maybe, but the difference is that the parasite causes loose stool and frequently going. If the dogs stool looks normal before she steps in it and she is not going more often than she should be for the feed you are giving then probably no. If the dog is going so often and so much that its everywhere to the point she has no choice but to walk in it then yeah, maybe.
If you like the dog and want to try to giving it a fair chance I would seriously give some thought to an above ground kennel. You used to be able to get them as a kit from Lion Country Supply in Pa. They seem small for a dog, but my dogs liked them. The floor is a metal grate and the stuff falls thru so they cant walk on it but once. Good luck, might be the best dog you ever own.

Well Started, the vet gave us Flagyl, and it is a tablet that you give them. I think the actual test was around $ 25.00

Msinc, ItsOlMander did not say that her dog acted crazy, was dumb, or barked all the time; her original complaint was that her dog is dirty when in her kennel, to the point that there is no clean place in the kennel due to all of the fecal matter everywhere. My suggestion to her was simply to run an inexpensive test to check for Giardia, that's all. It sounds like she has affection for this dog, so if the test comes back positive and the dog is treated, she may have a very different (and valuable) dog. That parasite causes pain, & some dogs become very restless when they are infected with it. That could explain why the kennel is a mess. Also - dogs with Giardia do not necessarily have diarrhea; they tend to defecate more often, & some of them also have a lot of gas (which contributes to the pain), but not all of them do. One dog's immune system works better and /or faster than another dog's immune system when fighting parasites. So the symptoms vary somewhat from dog to dog, as a result. But one symptom in common is the "dirtiness", so why not run the test to find out ?? If there are no parasites - then, she may decide to put the dog down. That being said, I am very familiar with high-strung, hyper, non-stop pacers who spent too many hours each day running themselves "ragged" - and losing too much weight, as well. In many cases, those dogs are just genetically "programmed" to be that way, & they don't make good pets, either. After trying all sorts of different behavioral and other methods on these "GO" dogs, I sadly & reluctantly had my vet put them down.
