Now tar don't talk bad about how a possum taste, if my father were alive he'd be 105, he told me when he was young his father bought a bluetick possum dog. They would tree them, shake them out, catch them and take them home. They would keep them penned and fed them cornbread and buttermilk then eat them. I've never ate any, but he swore if you baked them with sweet potato's they were good. They didn't buy a coon dog it was strictly a possum dog.
Thought I was the only one who had heard this but I guess not...my grandpa use to say the exact same thing...catch them, fatten em up and eat them...when I was 13 me and my little brother shot one on a squirrel hunting trip with our dad...rule I was raised on down here in north georgia was if you kill it you eat it...long story short my dad skint it and fried it and made me and my brother eat it,not all of it but enough to teach us a lesson....it was terrible, same greasy nasty taste as poorly cooked bear...
