There were only two in my entire time of competition hunts. The first one was my second hunt ever and I drew a professional handler.
On the first tree my dog had first and first and had a coon. I was hunting another mans dog for him. As I got to the tree the dog got wrapped in barbed wire and crying cause it was hurting. I put the leash on her and as I was trying to get it out of the barbed wire I tripped and fell on the dog crushing it and it bout ripped it's leg off but it got out of the barbed wire. It ran off down the creek dragging my lead and I had to catch it about 20 yards away It was my second hunt and I didn't know the rules that well. I got back to the tree and the other two shined the tree without me and were leaving. He said he plussed the tree they saw the coon. Got back to the truck and he had plussed those two, moved himself up and said my dog left the tree (which was true but not before I had handled it and was trying to get it out of the barbed wire so I guess he could have scratched me for casting the dog after it was handled but it was handled at the tree). I told him I didn't think he was right and wanted to put a question on the card. Then he changes his tune and pluses me 225 and changes everything back.
He talks the other guy into withdrawing.
Later on his dog trees on a telephone pole in the middle of a green field. He says he sees a coon, there ain't no coon there. I say I don't he says there's only two of us and he's the judge he's plussing it 225. Now we are tied.
His dog boo hoos around and the hunt time runs out. He tells me you know ole X can tree a coon he's treed that coon and he's plused 225. I tell him no hes still tracking hear him running (I was just about 19 and was didn't even think he would just say that). He tries to get me to understand two or three times then he just comes out and tells me "Look this dog needs one win to be a NtCh and he's getting it tonight. He's gonna tree that coon eventually but we are going to plus it now". I told him no I wasn't gonna do any such thing that was cheating.
He then informed me that he was a judge and well known. He was going to tell everybody at the club that I cheated at the first tree for not taking minus and get me barred for life. Who are they gonna believe him an upstanding judge that has been doing this for years or some kid in his second hunt. Said I had two choices one was to sign the card and take two pups off his wonder dog or never hunt a hunt again my choice.
Now I didn't know how it worked so I signed the stinking card and vowed to never be ignorant enough of the rules to allow someone to stick it to me gain.
That's why I know them as good as I do and it hasn't happened again. I cheated a good kid out of a first place that night, the other cast I know was honest cause I had just drew him in my first ever hunt the week before and won my cast thanks to that kid being an honest judge. That salted it even more and I still get ticked thinking about that night.
The other time wasn't near like that. I drew out in a small club and there was only one cast. I had a friend in the cast. The dogs got split up and my dog and the other three got caught by the hour to catch them. My buddy had plus points. This was the only cast at the club. He got a whole hour to hunt by himself because I and the other two were scratched by 5 minutes (we got them back in an hour and 5 minutes instead of 1 hour). Those other two were mad, I was the judge. Heck I didn't see why they were mad my dog was scratched too but they kept saying it was only a couple of minutes. Well then my buddy, who had rightfully won the cast, said unless I let them hunt against him he was going to tear up the card because he didn't want people to think he cheated by hunting an hour by himself. There was only one cast so I let the other two hunt (I kept my dog scratched) and my buddy won the cast anyway, no scores changed, they hunted out the whole other hour without scoring on another coon but technically I cheated when I let them two turn their dogs loose again.
