winding/layup

Looking for a true winding/layup dog. Most people call this type of hound cold nosed because they will fall treed on coon other trailing hounds cant smell. IMO they are not colder nosed but simply have the ability to wind that others don't. A true winding hound will trail with their head up opening here, there, and yon and fall treed. If you have or know of one that operates like that or better yet produces those kind let me know please. Even if they cant be bought I would like to find some for future reference. Call , text, pm, or post here please. Thanks

My Shelly female is as you described, I just bred her to Crocket, Eddie has hunted with her and has seen her operate in such fashion, she is not cold nosed by no means, I'd say medium, .......Gerald

the 1st thing you have asked about is lay up ability then the way you described it ,it sounds like your talking about a track drifter they are 2 completely different traits. maybe you want both idk.

winding

Thanks for reply Pam. We all use terms and descriptions differently. There isn't a text book for coon doggin that I know of. I believe both require the ability to wind to the degree a hound can locate source of sent. Both require a hound that will put their head in the air and trail or locate a tree off of drifting air sent. A true drifting hound will pick their head up and cut them off at the pass, so to speak, as opposed to using their mouth sparingly or circling out to make a pick up. Here again my personal use of terminology. I have seen true winding dogs fall treed on a true layup coon that cold trailing top shelf coon dogs didn't know were there and couldn't open on. not that the winding dog is better but they have the ability to wind where others don't. To me a layup coon is one that has been up a tree long enough for their sent to totally dissipate on the ground and tree itself. This requires winding ability for the hound to tree them. Same trait IMO.

ok! most will say there dog will do just what you have asked. winding and layup ability, are they the same? i personally have a dog that is a track drifter,it zigs and zags most tracks sometimes drifting a 100 yards or more the wrong direction before correcting the direction.even runs past the tree often just to have to return to find it. also will be opened on air scent fast, so fast i have seen her throw a bark or 2 on off game before realizing her mistake.
should be a layup dog but nope that is not the case at all.
if layup ability is what you are looking for you may want to put your collar on the dog and make sure it has what you truely want cause everyone does have different terms of winding and layup ability.

winding/layup

In Maine we can rig our coonhounds and bearhounds. That's the way we hunt. This is where you know if you've got a layup hound. You ride down the road with a layup dog and a cold nose strike dog. (I've done this) The layup dog will strike the cold nose hound won't. You put them both down and the layup hound will go out mostly silent. When it trees the cold nose won't even know there's a coon in the area if that coon has been up all day.I've got a Treeing Walker right now that does that on bear..They are worth their weight in gold..If you know how to hunt them and trust them, you'll get more game. I don't know if you can breed it, but I'm going to try....Paul

thanks for reply everyone. I am following all leads.

Drummerblue: not familiar with Darkside. I have been out of the game for a while. Would be interested in all the info you could provide.

Paul: sounds like you and I are on the same page. Would like to know more about your walker dog.

lay up, wind seeker!

Bought a pup from Kraute Creek Kennel in Ohio a few years back. He was off Mosquito creek Treedaddy hank and Wendy female. That is what you want!!! If that cross were made again I would buy one. He hunts the air for sure. Good mouth not super loud, but good bawl on track solid chop tree and you gotta love the music.

I think you'll see that the GrNt Rudds Dancin Bubba and GrNt Leons Darkside are similar bred ,the difference being their pedigrees are switched, one having the Runnin Rattler breeding on the sires side ,the other on the dams side.If you could research back the rest of the blood(opposite parent,Northern Blue Dancer) it will take you where you may need to go .The thing here is ,if you breed to it ,you may get the traits you're looking for or ,you may not ,but one thing for sure if you don't breed this blood in ,you wont have a chance to get it.(Like putting chocolate chips in pancake batter ,not every pancake may have chocolate chips ,but w/o the choc.chips they will be just plain pancakes).jmo......

Thanks again to everyone. I am following every lead. Good stuff Bluelabel.

I've even had a few calls from this thread. If I don't find a hound to buy I have found a few like minded people. Going to put some together and am interested in all sources. Thanks again.

I had a dog out of Russ's Treein Weasel and a Spanky female I called Horton Creek Bo that had those traits could tree coon sitting up with snow or heavy frost on the ground with no tracks going into the tree and a lot of times in the hunts when he treed the other dogs didn't even tree with him, ran with his head up opened about every 75 yards and was very accurate I would love to get another like him

Meadwoods Mountain Music Blue X Meadowoods Blue abby she has 24 pups out of this cross oldest just turned two. Both sire and dam are excellent on layups.

These pups can tree coon that haven't been down in freezing cold weather and shut out world class hounds.

Ive seen it done on several occasions . bought my stock from Matt turner all smokey river bred.

Abbey is bred to Blue now. SS and performance.

I've had quite a few my dog's all rig and road hunt head in the air
They will rig coon at 55 mph out the window and when you cut em loose they already know where the coon is get treed quick but usually don't say much on the ground when they wind it I think it is breed in but not every pup in the litters I've had can do it usually about a 50/50 shot
When you pick out a pup take some time to watch them and take some food or a treat make a short drag without them seeing and watch them find it you can tell pretty early on how they like to use their nose
I have pup's now and every day when I feed them I hide their bowl in a different spot within about 100 feet of the kennel and turn them loose they usually find it within 30 second but one tries to find my scent leading up to it on the ground and the other just wind's it kinda fun to watch
All I have is ol jet breed stuff but it works for me
I don't want one that has to smell every track on the ground lol
