I agree with a lot of the newer information coming out on vaccination of dogs. AAHA has set new guidelines to reduce the amount of vaccination in dogs and cats. We only give 3 core vaccines here including Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies to dogs. Parvo vaccination is so important in puppies. They should be started at weaning and repeated every 3 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age and 4 vaccines given (depending on your area). Distemper vaccines are given with the Parvo vaccines. Both of these should be repeated at one year. After that, I'm not sure Parvo and Distemper vaccination is that important if the last dose was given to a healthy year old dog. Rabies is given at 16 weeks , boostered at 1 year and then every 3 years depending on the state requirements. What I've done to limit the amount of vaccinations in dogs is use only one vaccine per year after one year of age. So they get Parvo on the 2nd year, Distemper on the 3rd year, and Rabies on the 4th year. It is all based on a 3 years rabies vaccine program. Like I said above, the distemper and parvo components may not be needed after one year of age, but I'd be putting a lot of dogs at risk and taking a big liability risk for my hospital if there was a big outbreak of either one and realized that these dogs were not properly protected. Distemper is a cold killer of dogs. It's really hard to treat and many die.

As far as Lyme dz, Rattle snake, Lepto , and other vaccines, it's really area specific. You need to weigh the risk vs the advantages of each depending on your area.
