Reasons to quit coonhunting !

I for one have had probly more setbacks as anybody had people even try and force me out at times but never have I ever thought about quitting I have slowed down but I just can't ever imagine not coonhunting and will do it till the day they throw dirt in my face and I am about to make my comeback again just remember : those that make it miserable if you wait long enough they will be gone I seen it to many times.

Reason number 1.
The inability to find a dog that suits me enough to fight thru the pains and ailments from decades of working on concrete by day and following hounds at nite, many of whom shoulda been shot.

The only time I almost quit was when my kids were small and my wife worked at night. I still do not want to stop.

Where this comes from I have had several younger hunters call me latley they get them a dog get all the new equipment get all excited about coon hunting go to a hunt and get way less than a warm welcome. Matter a fact it's like they are in the way for this sport to survive we need everybody you want to be mr coon Hunter go pay a $300 entry and let your ability shine but a lot of these younger hunters they got $50 left on a payday win , loose or draw they just want to learn and have a good time your job is even if they don't win you make them feel like a winner and be patient with them just like the older hunters were with you you shouldn't ever feel good about discouraging any Hunter enough to quit.

Anouther thing in church this morning it made me think about this when younger a lot of people have made mistakes despite all the good they have done over the years all anybody wants to talk about is that mistake !! Well let's compare it like double jeopardy were you were found innocent you can't be tried again for the same thing when sombody is forgiven for somthing ( and we should forgive people for things ) and give them a chance to do better and not dwell on their past all that does is hurt the sport the only ones that won't forgive and move on are ones that need to take a long look in the mirror jmo.

Guess it depends what you consider coonhunting?

To me it's taking a pup for walks and giving it the chance to make a good coonhound that pleases me.

Don't need the best light or best tracking system, don't need to kiss anyone's butt or take any crap from anyone carrying a piece of paper.

I seen where someone asked about good hounds that where only Nite Ch's and there where a lot of good hounds named. I wonder what would happen if the question would have been, Name dogs that where/are Gr Nite's not worth feeding??

So getting back to the first post--maybe we should let them enjoy the hound and the night before we throw them to the wolves???

I got out for a while once. A pup I had been working with for 10 months was hit by a car one night. I really believed he was gonna tree that night. He was at that point. He ran toward the road and I heard a car coming, I was just about to tone him back. I was too late. I had lost a pup earlier that year to Parvo that had all three rounds of shots. A couple other things, several weird vet bills, and a few nights of wading sloughs. I just threw up my hands !!

I never thought about it before but as Father Time is catching up to me and my body breaking down, I hope I have enough in me for one more good dog. But the way I'm going with pups, I might be 80 before that happens

.

Reasons to quit hunting?---NONE

I think the dogs and what we do is part of us. Sometimes in our life a big part and at times it gets shuffled to the back and becomes a lesser part.

Enjoy it and keep it in perspective with all of life's other issues. Success is not pictures in a magazine, it is not titles on a dog. Success is BALANCE and the Good Lord knows we have a lot to juggle in our lives and to maintain a BALANCE is the success that keeps us doing this for many years.

I agree too, except the working at concrete part..
I've been looking for that next one for quite awhile. It's hard when you put all that time & money into something and it don't make what you want or something happens to it.

Tar the loss of a hound can weigh heavy on the mind and heart. I just lost my old blue dog on Wednesday last week. She wasn't perfect by any means but she could put a coon up a tree. She was a good buddy, the kind of dog that would just chill out with you and the porch. Didn't ask much in return. She was the kind of dog that when nothing was getting a track you put her down and get one. Might take a while for her to get the track warmed up, but she could tree any kind of coon in the woods. Just took her longer than some later in life. I got to pet her a few minutes before she passed for the last time. I fed the dogs took my son to the bus and when I got back she was gone.

I was ready to throw in the towel.

Got a call later that day from a buddy said "It happens when they get old. Best way to help deal is find another one." He told me to check out a pup advertised on here. And he's on his way.

Quit

I've thought about quitting too but it's hard!!!i don't hunt no where near like I used to but that only because my kids come first and that's where my time goes!!! She plays a lot of travel ball so between work and that it's tough for me!!! But I still manage to get out some but this year it'll be alittle easier for me to go and I have something I like now!!!
