I've heard on numerous occasions from hunters saying that when they turn a dog loose they didn't want to see it again till they got it off the tree. And some would say they didn't hunt a Red dog because they didn't have the drive to get deep when coons are thin or not moving. Well I like for one to go get treed and have a coon whether it be close or a mile. I got a male Redbone Grntch Adams Shotgun Red and when you cut him he will tree RT at you or go till he's struck and treed. He has NO reverse and is deadly accurate and alone. When I talk to other Redbone people about him I'm told they don't like that. I'm told they like one to hunt out 800 to 900 yards and check back in. I'm just curious to what a majority hunters on this board thinks. Down here in GA you have to have a dog that gets deep to get struck on public land.

I like one just like you described yours in these hills in Tennessee where I hunt you have to have a dog with no reverse if you are going to tree one.

I want a dog that will hunt deep if he/she has to. But I don't want a dog that other dogs tree coons behind. Really 800-1,000 yds is plenty. If they can't find a coon in 1,000 yds, then they have a problem. I also don't want one that runs a road or trail to get that 1,000 yds. I also don't want one that runs a deer for 1,000 yds and then quits and trees a coon instead of coming back. I don't want one that I absolutely have to catch off a tree. But I can fix that with my Alpha. Now that is just my preference.

They need to be working hard no matter what they're doing.

I can handle either but prefer one to find me a coon on every drop, pretty quick, in any country, in any state, in any condition...and however they want to accomplish that suits me fine. But that usually means one without reverse.

And I don't care the color, breed, age, or whatever, I've seen very few that can do that consistently in my own backyard.

Red don't blow by coons or travel roads. He's hunting from the time you cut him. I've had him tree 80 yards from me. But on government land a lot of coons have been shot. He will strike and tree with dogs on coons close but if he needs to get deep he will hunt and hunt to get struck and treed. In situations where I want him in or if he gets on land he don't need to be I can get him back. He is tone broke

Close or deep as long as they have the meat looking down when I get to the tree, and they have to have a handle. Im not spending all night chasing dogs.

I have had them both ways,,,,I have found most that have no reverse tend to be more of a straight line kinda dog..I don't mind one that comes back,,,they seem to keep you out of places you don't need to be and also it is safer for the dog in my country

A dog that will come back seems to hunt what you put them in and hunt it out and normally will get treed if not load him up and move on..

Another thing I have found is that dog that comes back if he is a competitive type hound when you put him in a hunt he not coming back anyhow...

So my preference is one that hunts what you put them in but wont leave the country,,,doesn't hunt a straightline and most typically will get hooked but if he doesn't get hooked come on back

This kinda dog that's competitive and also independent accurate and holds pressure,,,hunts what you put him in and hunts it right,,,this is what suites me best and keeps me and hiself where we need to be..

Hunt smart hunt it right hunt what you put him in...I have one like this 13 months old suites me to a tee,

If he's a litter mate to Barnyard Crow, I'm not surprised he goes hunting plenty good. I'm pretty sure he was bred to do that for several generations.
Interest: I'd SS him. Red could be bred to the close hunters and that would produce dogs that go 800. Maybe that would work.

I like a dog to get gone and get treed . I don't think that I have ever been beat by a dog treeing coon behind me yet. I've been beat a lot of ways and that not one of them. I think 500 to a 1000 yard is good for a pup but a old dog better go with no come back or it won't stay here long

We went tonight and for some reason my 50 collar went dead. We were in some big hills and hollers. Red was way over a mile and been treed for hours before Blake found him. We had split up riding and the wind got up bad. But Blake got to where he heard him and went to him. Red had the coon. That's the first time I have been nervous. We were on a 7000 acre public land. Hunt till you strike and tree with the meat. That's my preferences.

Both those lines have some go. From my personal experience in breeding my female that was the highest blooded Fireball female alive at the time Harry put that out very consistently. I have had a large majority of my pups that are that way a large portion of the time for several years but when I bred off to him the whole litter was that way and got about the same from Oklahoma Twister. Only complaint many had was keeping up with them and people without a tracker have lost some of them. They aren't passing coons up though. However, when the coons are thin especially in competition they will go until treed. Most of the big hunt winners out of this stock of hounds were very similar. You can win local level hunts regular without that kind of drive but when you hit the big hunts then that kind of drive is often what wins, like it or not. Drive has been a huge issue for a long time within the breed, for winning big consistently, so that is one thing that if ya got it you need to stick with. Not the blowing past stuff as you can get but the going until they strike a decent track and get treed and working very hard to find that track wherever it may be as soon as it can.

Being from the mountains that I grew up in (wise co, VA) and now the mountains that I have to hunt because of not having much private to hunt. I like a dog to hunt out about 800 yards.....it's okay if it goes further, particularly if it's winding in the air or maybe cold trailing a little without saying anything.

The older I get and being in these mountains, the (go until treed type dogs) is something I don't know if I can handle. It would be one thing if we could drive around to get closer but usually you can't.....one way in and one way out. Not saying I wouldn't hunt that type but since this is a preference thread......I would prefer the 800 or so type dog that hunts what I put it in. If it comes back......thats okay with me. I guess my main thing if I hunted a no come back type dog, is that I would have to have it tone broke so I get it back when I wanted.

I've had a few that ultimately were the type I really liked and enjoyed.......and won casts in several states with them too.

All in all, if a dog gets out there, gets struck and treed with a coon and can split tree, hold pressure......I'm pretty happy.

I would say one of the biggest factors on hunting style would be the terrain you hunt, and how much property you have to hunt. I have some places that wont hold a big hunting dog and hunt some places that you have to have a big hunting dog. I just need 1 of each lol, but if I had to choose I would choose deep because I can always train one to come back but cant train one to go deeper. 100yds or a mile I don't care which as long as I see these when I get to the tree
