I have 2 pups here i cannot keep off the road. Any chance they get they are on any road they can find. If they see a car or lights they are gone after it. Have had 1 picked up off the interstate just taking it for a walk and had both chase a truck 1/2 mile last night to a neighbors where they caused a rukus.

Any suggestions?

shock collar put them in the woods and if they turn towards the road give them a little shock , also separate them.

I think I read this in of his books. Tie the dog out toward a road with traffic. When a car or truck comes down the road start with a little jolt. As it gets closer increase the jolt. As the. car passes hit them pretty hard. May try and read up
on it but I think that is how it went.

Yep..turn them loose separate. Pups love to run and play and like electricity, they will take the path of least resistance. Easier to run a road than walk in woods. I'd try the shock deal also, but if it doesn't change quickly, sounds like you might better purchase a new shovel. If they stay on the highway, you will need it.

I have one that does this when he travels. He hunts well, but if he's on the road going to an event and I don't give him some exercise before the hunt, he's off running a straight line down the side of whatever cornfield we turn out near, sometimes for a couple miles. Could be because there are no straight roads where I live, but mostly that he lies in a fenced yard at home and is used to running around every day.
Yours are still pups. I wouldn't shock them too much near roads or they won't wait for you near one. Try to find a closed pen somewhere to start them in, or at least a feeder. Once that hunting instinct kicks in, they won't be interested in running to roads if they've got some hot scent to follow..

Thanks for the help folks. These two are unique in that as much as it is the road, it is the moving traffic that really draws them in. They can see a car go by from 300 yards away and will head right for it.

I kinda agree with the guy that said I need a good shovel, and lucky for me I have one....cause I don't live in a super rural no road area and out hunting spots are smaller. I can't see them making it all that long at this rate.

Its annoying anyway, they have to go from kennel tie out and back because I can't trust them for 5 minutes.

My papaw used to break his yard dogs from chasing cars and hitting the road with a burlap sack. He would stick them behind the hub caps on his wheels and drive slowly by the dogs with the sack flapping around, when a dog grabs it and they get all wrapped up and drug a few yards they learn to quit real quick. Never saw a dog it didn't work on for chasing.

I had bought a female that was bad for running roads. I didn't know she ran roads till after I took her out hunting a few times. The first thing I did was tone break her to "here" then when I took her out hunting and she headed for the road, I toned her then threw the brakes on with the shocker. She learned real fast not to run roads.

Shock collar. I've had a few that thought it was a good idea to run roads always fixed it by shocking them for it.

He sure did, used to sharpen it with a good file often. Never saw one get run over or hurt, but I always got a good laugh when the dog finally got loose and looked around wondering who wrapped him up in that sack 😂

Thats totally an old farmers method! Never seen it done with a car or a hound but definately seen it work to break farm dogs from chasing your tractor! Shocking collars werent as common or as cheap back then.

Yes sir, the old man used to do it with his tractors as well. People may think it's over kill but I dare say they've never seen a dog get ran over by a hay tetter, rake or, God forbid, a mowing machine. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do with what you have. Papaw thinks I've gone crazy with all my new gadgets (shock collars, Garmin, cell phone, etc.)

Let me add this, I don't think it's your best option. A shock collar would be my choice, but I know for 100% the sack works.

You can tie him out by the road and every time a car goes by give him a little shock doesn't take long and they will be running away from the cars.
