Frustrated!

I've looked high and low, tried out a couple, and still cannot find a coondog. I have a young pup that i'm working with, but really would like to have something solid and finished. I tried out a dog the other night that had a pretty price on it and we didn't see the first coon. Most that are suitable aren't for sale majority of the time, and someone is always waiting to scavenge up the ones that happen to come up for sale. I'm hunting in very thin coons as well so finding the right dog is going to be tough. The search continues!

Keep looking for what you want, don't settle for less. But at least you're smart enough to try it before you buy it. And remember not everyone has the same opinion on what a good one is. You might go through a pile of them to get what you're looking for though. And remember you get what you pay for.

thanks

Thanks to those who have sent pm's. I have received some options of some actual 'coondogs' to check on. It can be very frustrating to drive long distances and waste time on stuff that is pure junk and not worth anyone's time. Again, thanks to those who have given me the opportunity to come check out your nice hounds.

Mike

Good luck.
It doesn't matter if you have unlimited funds to buy a top hound, they are near impossible to find.
I am convinced that in order to have a top notch dog a person needs to start with a pup or young dog that shows to have the tools you are looking for from a family of coonhounds you know to be the kind you like and make him yourself.

I can certainly understand your frustration, but just think about how hard it is to find one. The guy that owns it knows that too. Unless you get lucky and find one that the owner is having financial problems your going to be looking for a while.

sorry I just can not seem to let go of mouse, like they say there just so hard to find, she and I have had such a great time together and it would break my hear to see her go , and no one would want to pay not even me and I own her what it would take to buy her , I was going to price her at 3k but that's just too much for a 7 yr old dog and I don't need the money so I just cant sell her , I hope you find one like her that's younger and suits you soon. She gets to go to her first nt ch cast Saturday with my friend if we don't get snowed in.

That's the route I'm taking. I know I can't afford the caliber dog I'm looking for. After 54 years I'm still trying with no luck yet. But I've got a 10 month old out back.................

Are you looking for a good coon dog or top shelf material ? I believe dogs that will suit 75% of hunters can be bought. Maybe not everyday but they're out there. The other 25%, are gonna be hard to find. It depends on what it takes to make you happy. I usually take the middle road and find one young that I like and put the finishing touches on it. I don't like pups much and can't afford a top finished dog.

Elvis I'd expect you are harder to please then most. If you find the one your lookin for I'm glad I'm not payin for it lol

Every coonhunter wants a top dog. It is extremely hard and requires a lot of effort and time to get the right pup and start it and then finish it. Why do some people think that someone would go through all that it takes and then just sell it?

Richard,

Very good point, I've been out of hunting for several years and am in very thin coon, very hard to start a pup from scratch here where I live.

It is also extremely hard to just jump right in to the Coonhound world and get a top hound. Usually you have to go through several and "pay your dues". Don't get frustrated, keep at it.
Mr Elvis is a very smart and experienced man. You might try his advice. The problem here is finding the right young dog. Building a relationship with someone that has the ability to recognize a pups potential and who you can trust helps. Then you have to be willing to put forth the time and effort to finish it. Either that or pay someone else to do it for you.

Hound

Well i'm looking for something that doesn't have to be a world beater, like to find a solid dog to tree a coon and run my pups with, I had a 2 year old that was just a little hi strung for the pups but he got ran over last night while hunting, not color blind, just like to have something to hunt these pups.
