Next step in breeding. We have talked about the first.

We discussed selecting the best dogs you can find that has the characteristics you desire. You have that litter of pups born and your going to select one or two to carry on. More than on in my opinion is to many. Now I think the serious guys keep several and wind down as characteristics develop. I selected two males. As far as color they were about indentical in the entire litter. Probably a little more like the mom but sire and Dam are close.
I picked two males at very young age of just a few weeks old now at four months one sounds and acts like sire. One sounds and acts like mother. Since both sound and look good it doesn't matter which to me. So over the next couple years I develop these hounds in the woods. What do you breeders look for. The pup with the best combined genetics or the one that favors the sire or Dam more. I could live with the pups treeing Coon like either one does.

Individual pup

Bruce, I like to look for the one that stands out somehow. Just watching a litter you can see the differences in the pups. I don't care which parent it favors because if I have done my work and made a good cross, then I will be good to go either way.

Sometimes I don't see things from mom or dad till a few years down the road. Sometimes you see traits of the parents right off and can tell who marked that pup. Usually the physical characteristics are the easiest ones to see. The hunt traits obviously take a little longer to figure out.

I just put all my eggs in one basket. One pup and me. If it makes it, great and if not I can try again cause I keep mom around and she is bred to produce. So far I have been pretty happy with what I have gotten.

What I am looking for is going to be harder to get that what most are looking for. I see an opening all are breeding for a certain type of dog because that's what they see the big boys winning with I see a need for a different type dog that will take them type of dogs game plan away yes they will be independent in their own way. Yes they will not pass any coon up. Yes you will be able to walk right past them going to a dog treed deep and come back and plus their coon because more often then not they will have one what I am talking about is a meat dog a hide dog so I will be doing a lot of culling lol!!

When I make a cross "to care on"......I look for combined genetics.....
Presently I kept the whole litter (4)....there hunting age now
All have the big mouths from both parents....2 r naturals like there parents .
Above average intelligence goes to one of the natural males.
Quick learner, no nonsense, both parents possesed this.
2 r what I consider slow to start like their Grandsire.....they have till Feb. or they r culls in my book.
All r open trailers ........
I place a premium on " natural talent" and intelligence .I consider both inherited traits.... doesn't matter if they sound or looks like sire or dam..... just take m to the woods and it comes out "FAST".....can't help but do what's its been designed to do.

The pup with the best combined genetics assuming it is healthy and has no characteristics I can't live with.
