Cant figure this out

I am fairly new to this site and wanted to get input on a problem I am having. I am hunting a dog that is 4 years old that was laid up for a year or so before I got him. During that "lay up" period he was diagnosed with a thyroid problem which he takes medicine for. With the medicine, we have corrected his weight issue and have gotten him into hunting shape. We started this year with hunting him alone with not so good results. Mind you this dog was always open on track and a hard tree dog. Then all of a sudden one night he went completely silent on track and started putting coon up left and right. I mean we had a stretch going of 21 straight trees with coon in them. Fast forward a month and a half and he went right back to opening on track and missing a lot of trees. I cannot for the life of me figure out how a dog can learn to go silent to be more effective and then completely fall back out of that. Thanks Jim

It's been my experience with a dog with a thyroid issue but they become inconsistent the remainder of their lives.
