I would like to see !

Either a major hunt or a large portion of one for 50 yrs or older man some of this has got to where it is a grueling marathon it just is just not fun anymore for some of us older guys they talk about not having big enough hunting places anymore some of these dogs nowadays they don't make big enough spots to hunt never thought I would say it.

You may remember some dogs getting shot in a hunt over around Poteau several years ago. One of those was mine. We turned loose in a thousand acres, and had went through it in thirty minutes. I sold a super nice female after that because I was worried that she was gonna blow out and get run over or shot.

I think they make hunts like you're talking about, only they're not specific to age. They're cur hunts. I bought one and it'll be hard to go back to hounds after hunting a dog with some handle and sense.

We like the HTX's. My knees are bad and I have a hard time keeping up with these young guys. Even at the last HTX, my husband and the inspector went up a short steep hill and waited at the top while I climbed up on my hands and knees.

Mostly squirrels. I don't even pretend to know a lot about the curs yet, but it seems to me like they either make good coondogs that will tree a squirrel, or good squirrel dogs that will tree a coon. Very few seem to excel at both. What they do seem to excel at is handling and accuracy. I made 12-14 trees this morning, never used a leash, never got more than 100 yards from the truck. The more I do this stuff the more I like it!

I've been huntin 36 years. I have owned and buried 8 above average coondogs. Now I have owned way more coonhounds than that. But I stress 8 coondogs. I've never been real big into the comp huntin. Did some when I was younger. But above all the coondogs I ever turned loose was a male I had off of Tennessee Hardrock crossed on a Cur. Smarts you would not believe. Never needed a leash. He could cur dog em ,,,then strike a track and jam one up. In that order ,,,,same night. Go 10 yards or 1 mile. He was a once in a lifetime dog. He completely ruined me on how a dog should tree coon and handle. But I'm just a lowly pleasure Hunter,,,,,,,,,But I expect alot when I unsnap one if he's gonna eat my feed.

We could have a possum trot senior national championship. I guess it'd have to be in KY though.

Re: Re: Possum

If we are going to have a possum hunt here in Ky, let me know I will stop running my hounds so the population can grow a little. Lol.

I may not even be worthy to respond to this thread because most of you fellows been hunting as long as I've been puffing air. Saying that I've been lucky enough to own a good mountain cur for squirrels and had family that owned some of the best hog dogs I've ever seen. They would listen like folks and was as loyal as anything I've ever been around. As nice as they were and good as they handled they never could fill that spot inside me that them hounds could!

But I reckon I'm in my golden years as a hound chaser...maybe in another 15 or 20 I may sing a different song.

I thought Yadkin said KY was the possum hunting capital of the world now and You had stole his thunder. That's the only reason this big hunt will be there.I mean a possum should smell the same no matter what state it's in. I do have some possum feeders out here though. I will post pics when I check camera.
