Need some advice

I have a one year old male that began opening on tracks by himself at six months of age. Between six and eights months he was hunted 24 times when at eight months he treed for the first time. He was by himself. In my opinion so far so good. Between 8 and 12 months old he has been hunted 48 times- 27 alone and 21 with another dog. Now my concern. In those 48 hunts, he has started or been open on 105 tracks and treeing only 12 times. This young hound when hunted with another pays very little attention to them. Occasionally he will join them on track only twice has he backed them at the tree. The other 10 trees are solos. He has not had any shot down to him. What would you do with this hound: A). continue as before; B). Adjust - if so how; C) cull. Thank you.

If he has a Coon knock it down to him. Sounds like he doesn't understand why he needs to tree. If you went to work and didn't get a paycheck who you still goto work?

Good luck. Sounds like you got a good pup. A lot of the time the scenario is the other way around. To many trees and not many tracks

break him off all that trash he is running. 105 tracks and only 12 trees sounds like he is running more trash than coon.
this is what i hate about guys saying hunt them buy there self all the time. if it's not working out in a positive direction why keep wasting all your and your pups time doing negative training. jmo
on the positive side you have lots of desire to hunt you just need to achieve better results. good luck

Pam, He is still a pup and may not be running trash he may just be trying to work tracks he is not able to take because if you read it the problem has come on more with age and the last thing a young dog like this needs is to be put with a old dog because you need to find out for sure what he is doing and if he can put a tree at the end of it knock it down to him and if it is slick scold him and move on, This pup is wanting to take charge and if he is not singled out the end result will be a me-too-er or trying to figure out what happened to the old dogs where they have picked up and started opening on the tracks that he was running that you never figured out what it was to start with and then you are left with more problems .

Adjusted

I got him treed first thing last night and gave it to him. Next track he worked out of a woods and took the track 300 yards across a bean field and treed real well although he pulled just before I got there. Second track caught an opossum. Small sample size but I am encouraged. Try again tonight. Thanks for your responses.

Sounds like you have a fire cracker on your hands. If you get him trash broke a little you will likely see the % of tracks finished improve drastically. Don't try to break him all at once, mix the good with the bad and he should keep gettin better. Good luck with him.
