I'm Back In It!

Well, I tried to give it up. Thought I was done chasing these dang ole blue dogs but I just couldn't do it. I even went out and bought a nice little squirrel dog from Dave Woofter, which I still have. But the closer we got to fall the more I started to itch for a coon hound even though I have many friends with hounds that I could hunt with, It just ain't the same. So after about 6 months without a hound I bought a nice little female from Shannon Senter in VA. I must have wanted her bad cause I told the wife I was buying a dog at 8:30 Saturday morning and a 9:30 we were on the road. We got back home about 12 hours later with a very nice (fat) little blue female. She is absolutely beautiful and after 4 days, she finally barked in the kennel once last evening. I will take her to the woods tonight and she and I will both get some long needed exercise. She is doubled up on Utchman's Zeb dog which I am a very big fan of the Ranger V blood by way of Broad Ax Blue Max. We'll see what happens but she and I have a long way to go to get down to our fighting weight

Rex & Wayne

Thanks, I'm not sure if I knew what I was doing when I got back into this thing. I took her out last night for the first time sense I got her and man, she knows how to hunt! Dropped the leash on her and didn't get her for an hour and a half. She didn't do anything wrong, just was hunting. Caught her on the backside of the hill about 1000 yards from where I turned her loose and called her in. Never heard a bark and it's dry as a bone in the woods. Time will tell but she's over weight and I hate to see how she goes when she gets in shape, LOL!

Wayne, thanks for posting that piece on Elbert Vaughn by Guy, some real good reading there. A lot can be learned from reading that, especially for the breeders out there, in all coonhound breeds.....Ron

that's

why I posted it, to give the up and coming guns a pattern or scheme to follow to improve what they got... Elbert and his wife knew how to breed stock.

No doubt! I think a lot of breeders of coonhounds could benefit from Elbert's patterns. He gave many modern day blue cooners a good start. I remember reading an article in an old BBCHA blue book about Mr. Vaughn coming here to WV to hunt with the famed Ellison's Tige of Gilmer Co. I believe he bred a couple of his fine females to ole Tige. He wasn't afraid to go outside to get what he needed which IMO we are lacking in the Bluetick breed today.

On a different note, I've hunted my little female the last two nights, second time for her in a year and second time for me in about 6 months, we're both in dire need a exercise. Last night we made the trip north a few miles to hunt the PA game lands. Had a good hunt with my good friends, Rob Haller, Jim Wolfe and Wayne Musgrave. It's was super dry and hot! My little female will definitely hunt, strike and tree but I can see right off that she is extremely rusty and IMO has never been finished. I have my work cut out but I'm up for the challenge. Going again tonight with my good friend Tim Wolfe.

Good hunt

Went out with my good friend Tim Wolfe last night. Took my female along with Tim's two dogs Satch and Sis. We had 2 dens and one on the outside. Extremely dry and hot out! All dogs did a good job and my female is starting to show a little improvement but still a long way to go. I'm loving this, don't know what I was thinking when I got out of coon hunting but it sure fills a big void. Thanks for the replies......Ron

Some dogs don't really start cranking it till their older. Just keep having fun. And don't take it too serious.

After 45 years of doing this, having fun is what's it's all about Your right, some dogs don't start doing it right till they have a little age on them. In the case of this little female, she just hasn't been hunted much. She has been laid up for nearly a year and has had a litter of pups in between so I'm sure she's got a lot to offer, I just need to bring it out. Also, she is absolutely beautiful and I will be showing her come this spring. She will grand with ease. Thanks to all for the replies, I do enjoy talking with you all and seeing what's up in the coon hound world.....Ron

I'm about 20 minutes out of Fairmont and probably about 1 hour & 20 minutes from West Union. I used to do a lot of hunting down on Route 18 toward Glenville from West union. Was good hunting at one time. We used to hunt Doddridge Co a lot because the nightly limit was 4 coon and only 2 coon a night up in Harrison Co where I'm originally from. Please feel free to give me a shout if you're ever in this area again. Have a great day....Ron

Good Hunt

I took my little female out last night with my good friends Tim Wolfe and Hayley Ford. Hayley is only in the 7th grade but is quickly becoming a seasoned coon hunter. Tim took my old dog, Satch last night and Hayley handled that big 80 lb. dog like it was a pup. We just had one track and both dogs did very well on it ending up on a huge Oak tree that was full of eyes. I know for certain we counted 4 sets of eyes and there could have been more. Got a short video and had a great time. We called it a night after that cause Hayley had school and my granddaughter came down with severe stomach pains so I headed on in. It's good to be back for sure.

Thanks Dan, good to hear from you. Hope all is going well with you and your family. I see where you had Duke and another dog qualified for the world, great job. Yes, I tried to give it up but I just couldn't. I was out hunting ginseng and realized how much I missed the woods and coon hunting so here I am.

Tim, Hayley and I took Maggie and Satch back out for a quick hunt again last night. We just had one track and they treed and had one setting there. Both dogs did well but Satch did extremely well. He's really making a nice hound and sounds like a hound should! Bad storms in the area this evening so I'll be laying in.

I should have gotten one of those pups when Scott had them. The mother to Rebel was the only Tan female out of that litter, I believe. She was out of Bud and Wayne Hanson's Dottie female I believe. Dottie was a dang good dog too. That should be a good cross, lot's of Boomer blood with ole Bud top and bottom along with some of your Dad's best. Should be Good. Keep me posted on the pups.

Satch is out of George Jeffers Sport dog and his Emma female, both pretty heavy in Utchman blood going back to old Ranger V. Good luck.
