Wondering what everyones thoughts are about what breed might work for blood tracking and baying on dead or wounded bear, must hunt close and bark on dead or wounded game, needs to have the smarts to handle good and stay out of trouble.

I have had blood trailers before I prefer small dogs easier to deal with in the brush. Well bred Dachshund are hard to beat. This site might be of help:

I have had two of my own that really stood out, the absolute best and you are going to laugh, was a boxer. H
e would track with the best of them and if it got a little trough at the end that just made him like it all that much more. The other was a lab.

I had a friend that had a small beagle that was an absolute pro at tracking and was a pleasure to handle. Many states you have to have them on a leash at all times.

I know where a malinois is now that I have not seen in action but from the numbers he has already recovered and from what I hear he must be good also.

The bottom line is if the dog is intelligent usually the dog will do it's part if the handler knows how to train them.

Used to be a man in my neck of the woods that was the go to guy for blood trailing. He had kemmer curs. Recovered alot of deer with them.

One point that needs mentioned again is off leash or on leash for your state. In my state they have to be on leash so the small dog makes it a lot easier. If you are in a state that allows off leash then good winding dogs like Blue Lacys and other dogs from tracking lines. United Blood Trackers has a great web site as well.

I have two tracking dogs for deer and one is a Dashound and one is a Lab and Beagle cross both do a good job but as for the smaller dog being easier to handle in the woods if its open that maybe true but if its thick my Dashound wants to go under vines and brush where the bigger dog will go over or around and i will tell you that the Dashound stays home if a deer heads into a Kudzu patch.

If it also needs to bay live wounded game I'd go with a cur of some kind a black mouth or catahoula both blood trail well I've seen in Texas where the cats have caught wounded deer
