What are your opinions on spanking in school? I am completely on the fence about this issue. It used to be so commonplace but has become so controversial now. Growing up, there was no question in my mind that my teachers were my authority figures during the school day. They could discipline me, and if it included spanking me then they could do that. My parents supported it as long as it was fair, reasonable, and warranted.

I only got one spanking in school. This was in 1986 in Texas. I was 6 years old and in the 1st grade. One day I kept running in the hallway. I would break out of line and run and thought it was so funny. My teacher kept warning me. I knew I was supposed to walk in the hallway, but running was more fun. Finally, my teacher gave me a swat, just one, with a paddle. It was one of those paddleball paddles with the ball and string ripped off. That cured my hallway running.

This was 1986, and if it happened today there might be a major controversy. How do you feel? If you were my parents, would you be mad at the school? Do you think teachers should have the power to spank like in the old days? Even in schools that allow spanking, it is usually the principal and not the teacher who does it. Should any school administrator have that right?

As most could imagine on here. I had my little butt pattled all through school. From 1-12. Think I had a few in technical college that wanted to hahahha. Just could not hush up. Prolly had some kind of child disorder. I think they should still pattle myself. Whip that tail if they do wrong. I rem when mama would make us go cut our own hickory to get a whipping with to. How often does that happen now? Never and it use to skeer me to death. Lol. Actually I think we are all to soft nowdays. The whipping have stopped because the dern gov. Children more spoiled rotten than anytime in history to. Adults to. I'd like to whip several right now but I'd go to jail.

At home, I occasionally got the switch and the belt, and they were a thousand times worse than a paddling at school!!

Had a couple at school and a lot more at home. Never hurt me, well it did at the time but not later in life. Haha. Mom used to go cut a lilac switch. Got a lot of them....never got many from Dad but when I did, I didn't do it again. Lol.

I'm sure many will be shocked to hear I got my fair share of switch or whatever else they could grab dancing. Knowing Mom was upset about something & Dad was on his way home from a long week on the road meant some light sleeping. Do something at school? Oh sweet lord! Cousin was School Board President & his Mom the school nurse for decades, teachers & coaches just mention anything there would be hell to pay at home.

Times have changed, I was lucky to raise my daughter in an old fashioned redneck school system. Teachers borrowed her knifes, she'd be piggyback with a choke hold on the heavyweight wrestler going down hallways, taking up 2 spots in the smokers lot with the 83 tonner. Just your normal laugh mouth sassy country girl, just a couple words curbed her. How's your Momma doing?

I know she got wacked with some clothes hangers & lanyards by staff but I'm pretty sure she said something first.

Her freshman or sophomore year her coaches, she was a wrestling manager, called he explained to me the situation & put me on speaker phone to talk to my daughter. The same coaches who sweated like hell when the cops did a weapons check on the students trucks. Think they found a dozen rifles & shotguns, just stern talks about weapon safety were handed out.

I have had people tell me that my teacher should have made me miss recess for running in the hallway. Looking back, that wouldn't have had the same impact(no pun intended) that the swat did. I wouldn't have considered losing recess to be a REAL punishment. It would have simply been an annoyance.

I AM ALL FOR IT. HAD MY SHARE OF THEM IN HIGH SCHOOL. I DID NOTHING REAL BAD, JUST STUPID STUFF NOW THAT I THINK OF IT. NEVER HURT ME ANY. KIDS TODAY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR TEACHERS OR ANYONE REALLY. A GOOD CRACK ON THE A$$ NEVER HURT ANYONE. MY DAD PADDLED US, SWITCH, BELT. IT GOT MY ATTENTION.

Hate to break it to you all, but the kids aren't the problem. It is the lack of parents. How many of these kids are growing up with separated parents? Living with other family members because their parents are chemically addicted to something? Disciplining a child in school doesn't do much good when they run wild the second they leave.

You want to fix the problem? First you have to identify it. Look at the number of divorced/single parent households today compared to 25-30 years ago. That is the problem my friends and letting the government throw money into social programs isn't helping.

Actually, at my young age of 6, I felt more comfortable with my teacher doing it because I knew her. At that age, I didn't even know the principal. I never saw her. She was a total stranger. I saw my teacher everyday and developed a close relationship with her. A paddling by a total stranger would be horrible.

This is kind of a mixed topic for me. I certainly believe in discipline and corrective action when warranted!!! But, that's based on my upbringing with strong family values (never heard curse/swear words until I went to jr. high).

The flip side is that when you have kids from broken families, with drug abusing and/or abusive parents, it's a different situation. School may be their "safe zone". You don't want to punish these kids in their only safe zone. You need to find another way to deal with their issues.

When kids grow up in an environment where cursing/swearing/drinking/smoking/drugs is the norm, they need another option. In this type of situation, we need to try to help them, not punish them more!!!

If you are: a curser, a swearer, a violent drinker, an excessive smoker, a drug abuser, a spouse abuser, a child abuser, you may be offended by what I've said. If so, wear it!!! I'm especially sensitive to these issues right now because of a local recent murder/suicide situation where these elements were in play. All we can do now is try to help the kids.

Sorry to go on a rant, but if you know of a situation where the wife is cheating (or the husband is cheating), this could be a result!!!

That is so right. So many kids come from horrible home situations. Everything starts in the home. If things aren't right in the home, they won't be right in school. Teachers are not the ones who should have the burden of the primary responsibility in raising the kids. Teachers have a role, but it is supplementary.

When I went to school, I had a foundation of discipline that was already in place. That didn't stop me from occasionally acting up, especially in the younger grades. However, the foundation had been laid. I was already 5 years old and had been disciplined before. Most of my whippings took place where they needed to----at home. My teachers merely supplemented what my parents were doing at home. They worked together as one heart beat. I feel so bad for the kids that don't have that strong base.

I think I was the last of the era to get spanked. I remember it on the news about spanking in public etc. But I know i would stop whatever i was doing when my parents gave me hell cause i knew i could get whacked. I probably only got it half a dozen times but threatened lots. And half a dozen beatings was enough to make me think twice. At least when somebody was watching lol.

My Grandma spanked me once, stayed in the back of my mind till i was grown.

My kids will get it one day. I think It makes people think twice before stupid things and gives a healthy fear and respect towards your elders. Much laking in the generations below me.

As far as school goes I think it should be dealt with at home, If it properly dealt with at home it will cure the issues at school and elsewhere.

Just like a kid playing with anything that is sharp, pinches or burns or bites. Get hurt once and will respect it forever.
