What I look for
Well After 45 to 50 years of hunting English hounds, and NOTHING but English hounds, I can tell you this. If you have NO personal experience with either parent, reach in and grab the sex you want and wish for the best, "if pups are 10 weeks old or younger."
If you have had the experience of hunting with one of the two parents (on more than one occasion) and you like that dog, then pick the BOLDEST pup that looks like that parent.
If you have owned and hunted both parents, pick the ALPHA (boldest) pup, that is of the same sex of the parent you liked the best. By doing this I have found that I have the best chance of finding a pup to replace what I am hunting. This pup may not be exactly like it's parent but it will be more like it's parent than the other pups. Now this is more true if you have always tried to choose that ALPHA pup from generation to generation. If you have not done that with consistency, then you reduce the chances of having those ALPHA traits passed along in each generation, to the point that you can easily see which pup(s) are alpha by nature.
