Picking a pup....

I look for one that doesn't hang with the rest of the litter.....one that is curious and into everything, and one that is not shy.

when i get a pup from someone else i just let my daughter catch one she likes .when i raise a litter myself i just keep the last one nobody picked . the time spent on the pup will define if it makes a coon dog or not.

The last few times I have just divided them by sex and then just reached in and grab a female. That seems to be working much better than picking the best acting one.

That sounds like a good plan Jim.

If I raise a litter I usually pick by who catches my eye looks & personality wise, seems to work for me only when I pick my fav and place it with someone else lol.

Well I will tell you I was thinking about this the other day. I hunt English hounds and I've raised 2 litters off top self males and females. And wow that's a hard breed to sell puppies. People will call and say I want to book a blue male, tri colered female, one with a off colored ear! Ect it's rediculous. I will tell people this in 6 months the pup you pick out won't look anything like it does now and will change a lot. But I guess people think they have it figured out. The last litter I raised I had 13 pups to sell. And I had tons of calls with people wanting I tri colored female. Well at 6 weeks old not one tri colored one. I had one that looked like a rat terrier. You could fit her in the palm of your hand and she was blue. No one wanted her and I couldn't sell her wound up giving her to a well known coon hunter to run loose on the farm. About 15!months later I bought her for $3500 because I Hurd she was a coontreerer and making a nice young hound. Never saw her but when I did he pulled out a 67 pound gorgeous tri colored female.lol. I had one just didn't know it. She was the runt of the litter but was the biggest female. My advice is to close your eyes and grab one. But I've raised 3 litters of pups. I've had my best luck with the runt every time.

What I look for

Well After 45 to 50 years of hunting English hounds, and NOTHING but English hounds, I can tell you this. If you have NO personal experience with either parent, reach in and grab the sex you want and wish for the best, "if pups are 10 weeks old or younger."

If you have had the experience of hunting with one of the two parents (on more than one occasion) and you like that dog, then pick the BOLDEST pup that looks like that parent.

If you have owned and hunted both parents, pick the ALPHA (boldest) pup, that is of the same sex of the parent you liked the best. By doing this I have found that I have the best chance of finding a pup to replace what I am hunting. This pup may not be exactly like it's parent but it will be more like it's parent than the other pups. Now this is more true if you have always tried to choose that ALPHA pup from generation to generation. If you have not done that with consistency, then you reduce the chances of having those ALPHA traits passed along in each generation, to the point that you can easily see which pup(s) are alpha by nature.

I let the pups pick me, always found that works the best. I couldn't go get the last one but my daughter went with her Poppa on a Christmas Eve road trip. This is the one who won the drag race.

.

Had a guy come by last week and he asked me to turn the pups out. He said he always picks the first one out of the pen. I am not really sure there is a good way to select. Litter I have now when they were about 3 weeks old I picked a male and female I liked. Right now at 2 months the Female would still be my female pick but the male has dropped to about #3 on the list.

Picking pups

It all depends on what you want as your No. 1 can't do without trait. If it is color, tight feet, loud voice or most aggressive alpha disposition then don't fool yourself as you will never be happy without it so pick the pup that displays your No. 1 requirement.
The biggest mistake that I have made over the last 44 years is not picking the most intelligent pup. Looking back I have never seen an outstanding dog that wasn't also very intelligent. Early starting natural ability without a high level of intelligence results in just a nice coon dog of average ability.
Don't confuse shyness and intelligence. A pup that sit back when approached by strangers is often the smartest in the litter. The boldest pup is often the dumbest and doesn't recognize danger and thinks nothing of taking on an 18 wheeler. Also the most aggressive alpha pup in the litter only means that it is possessive and likes to dominant other dogs. When it is grown it probably couldn't kill a 15 lb. coon in a week!
If I have limited time to analyze a litter I prefer the one that would rather have a pat on the head that dog food. It will always strive to please it master instead of having the personality of a cat. I hope this helps young hunters. This is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

If I want a male, I make sure it has two nads; no large over-bite; not bad flat feet and crooked legs; not bad cow-hocked; dark brown eyes; and is not shy.

If I want a female, I make sure it has no large over-bite; not bad flat feet and crooked legs; not bad cow-hocked; dark brown eyes; and is not shy.

This way, if I end up with a good one, I will also like how it looks.

The rest is just luck anyway.

If I raise a litter I will change my mind a hundred times till they are 8 weeks old. If I am buying a pup chances are it is out of state a long distance away and I'm not driving to pick it up. So here is how it goes, send me a picture, if I like the looks of it that is the one. It has as much of a chance as the rest of the litter to be good.

I pick one that looks the best to me (colored up the way I like). Picking the one in a lifetime is a crap shoot, so if I pick one I like and it turns out to be a dud, at least it'll look good.
