Terrain
Down here on the coast we are both cursed and blessed with Carolina bays/poccosins. These areas are the thickest of the thick, briars,pea vines, ironwood plants etc... A laurel thicket in the mountains is a joke compared to these areas. My point is that for us here in North Carolina a dog's true grit can only be seen in the bay. Not to take anything away from Idaho dogs, but chances are those six super gritty dogs would be destined for disaster down here. It's hard to bay what you can't see!
