Current Rabies Report for Pennsylvania

From VIN:
"The newest PA rabies map came out the other day and we're up to 129 Rabies cases this year. At least those are the ones that actually got sent in to the lab for testing. 7 bats, 11 cats, 2 goats, 1 horse, 12 skunks, 6 cows, 10 foxes, 4 groundhogs, and 76 raccoons."

Folks that is a lot of raccoons with rabies. Imagine the number not reported. Make sure those dogs are current on rabies vaccine everyone!

rabies

Sounds like the State of Pennsylvania needs to call the company I work for. Dynamic Aviation in Bridgewater,Va. We do bait drops in problem areas all over the country for the National Rabies Management Program. We drop bait which is an orally ingested bait that inoculate the wildlife that eats it. Rob Gregory

I believe about 2 weeks ago I saw a piece that it was not practical in Allegheny Co. because of the population and housing areas. They were distributing the bait packets by hand. They were described as about the size of a ketchup packet with a food bait on the out side and oral vaccine inside the packet when eaten.
Supposedly the attempt was to stop the westward spread.
The article stated authorities thought they were winning as the there were fewer new reports in this area.
I just tried to find the article.Couldn't. Did find this though.............

Thanks for the info. I posted on a thread awhile ago that I read in our newspaper about 2 cases in the county next to us and I think 9 cases in 3 counties in central PA.
I had my horses and dogs vaccinated but my barncat hasn't been around much. I need to pen her up and get her to the vet asap the next time she comes around.

Pretty slim chance if you have an adult dog that was vaccinated with a good quality rabies vaccine in the last 3 years. If I lived in these areas I'd vaccinate yearly.

That would be unnecessary. They judge the effectiveness of vaccines by doing a titer test. Truth is rabies vaccines done at 3 years is over kill, but the government is playing it safe with 3 year boosters.

Right. A one yr will last 5. They dont want anybody knowing it though. Ga an Nc has more cases of rabies than anout all other states combined. They spread the packs out of airplanes. Want let us put it our selves. I wish I could buy it.

They state will study the rabies reports and drop the fish cakes with rabies vaccine accordingly. Out near us they use helicopters and a few small planes, I get the reports when they drop since I work for the county Environmental Health Dept. Since I handle specimens to be shipped for testing I am vaccinated and titer tested every two yrs. Its interesting how different everyone in my dept. tests. My boss hasn't needed a booster in 15 yrs yet I need one about every 3-5 yrs. Everybody's system is not the same and vaccines can change. Its the same with the dogs.
As far as the dog and cat vaccinations we have 5 free rabies clinics a yr. I know the recommendation is shots allowable at 3 mos., then another one yr later then every three yrs. The thing with rabies vaccinations is you don't know how the vaccine was shipped and stored and how your dogs system handles it. With rabies exposure you never takes chances. Rabies vaccine is very safe, unlike some of the other vaccines that if given too much too often can possibly cause organ damage, rabies vaccine from what our vets tell us can be safely given every yr. So why take chances, raccoons are one of the three target vector carriers and seem to be the highest tested with positive results. You can do what you want but I get my dogs vaccinated every yr and they are healthy. Unlike house dogs that don't hunt our hounds are constantly exposed. Its a dreaded disease but due to our countries vaccination laws we have really controlled the outbreak of it in our dogs. Other countries like Africa have hundreds of dogs and people die every yr from it.

So then somehow my county found out. Sent me a bill for going outta county to het shots. I called em and said. Yeah. Good luck with getting that. LOL.

Used to be able to buy them here and give them yourself same as parvo, 5 way, etc. So now it's pay an office visit plus shots to a vet, or wait for a clinic somewhere in the area. Clinics are $10 a shot usually. Well worth it but it's finding one within reasonable distance that's on a day it suits is sometimes the problem.

Tractor Supply has clinics if you have one near you. My friend just got a cat and said she wants to take it there for a rabies vaccination. She thought they charged $15 or $18 a couple of yrs ago when she had a dog vaccinated.

Read last wk that a rabid coon was shot in Lucinda PA (Clarion Co). A guy walked into his barn and it growled at him. He said it had quills in its face. Same article said a rabid fox was killed in Pleasantville PA (Venango Co); it was attacking a guy's horse. The horse was vaccinated, but will still have to be quarantined for 90 days.

I THINK IT WOULD BE GOOD TO LET HUNTERS PUT OUT SOME PACKETS IN THERE AREAS. BUT I LIVE IN THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF MARYLAND SO I KNOW WE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. WE ARE TO CLOSE TO DC.

COULD YOU GUYS MAYBE PUT UP A PIC OF THE MAP WITH COUNTIES. I HUNT SOMERSET AND BEDFORD COUNTIES IN PA.

Clarion and Venango are in NW PA. Lucinda is about 10 miles from here and Pleasantville is about 20 miles. We hunt coon in Clarion Co. A few yrs ago, the Amish had a cat with rabies, they killed all the cats on the farm and the father and all his sons had to get the series of rabie shots.
